Throwback Thursday: A 'golden' oldie
The March 24, 1986 issue of National Home Center News, the forerunner of HBSDealer, covered the second annual National Home Center Industry Advertising Awards. The event was organized by National Home Center News and leaned on the juding expertise of four media groups -- including the Television Bureau of Advertising.
Among the "Golden Hammer" award winners was Edward Hines Lumber. The Chicago-based pro dealer took home the award in the "Best TV Commercial and Best Commercial Campaign (retail sales $25 million to $99 million)."
Scenes from the winning commercial are above. The script went something like this:
Spokesman: "Oh, all that time, all that money, and you ended up with half a deck."
Little girl: "Good night daddy, good night Muffin."
Man: "Should have gone to Hines."
Spokesman: "Your money goes further at Hines."
"If this year's National Home Center Industry Advertising Award winners are any indication, the creativity and quality of advertising now coming out of the home center field is equal to , and often better than, much of the advertising currently being produced by retailers in other fields," said Wyatt Kash, editor.
Other Golden Hammer winners of 1986 included Sandstone Home Center of Bakersfield, Calif., for best commercial (retail sales under $25 million) and Handy Andy Home Improvement Centers, for best TV commercial campaign (retail sales $1o0 million plus).
