California supplier debuts HempWood

A Southern California lumber supplier said that it is the first company in the world to stock HempWood.

Reel Lumber Services, a lumber and hardwood supplier servicing builders, carpenters and woodworkers in SoCal, said it believes that the product will "revolutionize the hardwood lumber industry."

"We’re honored to be the first company in the world to stock HempWood," the Anaheim-based company said in a prepared statement.

Last November, Reel Lumber acquired 25 HempWood boards and distributed them to five builders in the market. On Feb. 6, the supplier unveiled some of the creations made from HempWood including furniture.

HempWood opened a new 16,500-square-foot pilot plant in Murray, Ky. last year. The hemp-based product is made via a patented process that utilizes bio-mimicry to transform hemp fibers and protein based bonding agents into a viable substitute for anything solid oak can be used for.

The manufacturer also says that its hemp is grown through sustainable methods, with the objective of eliminating deforestation.

Founded in 1932, Reel Lumber Service operates locations in Anaheim, Corona, and Riverside, along with a mill in Temescal Valley.
