Eye on Retail: Academy Sports expands

Eight openings are planned for 2022, including Atlanta and Houston.

Katy, Texas-based Academy Sports + Outdoors, Inc., which lists free assembly of grills among its customer services, plans to open at least eight new stores in 2022.

The expansion will fill in certain existing market. in Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky and Texas, and expand Academy's footprint in-to Virginia and West Virginia.

The retailer expects to grow to 267 locations in 18 states.

With these openings, Academy's existing store count will grow to 267 and expand its reach to 18 states.

Academy says it is evaluating additional locations for stores that could also open in 2022.

We are confident that our wide assortment of top brands and value products, coupled with outstanding customer service will make Academy the go-to sports and outdoors retailer for families in these new communities."

The company revealed the following 2022 target locations. 

•          Atlanta, spring;
•          Lexington, Ky., summer;
•          Panama City, Fla., summer;
•          Atlanta, summer;
•          Richmond, Va., summer;
•          Houston, fall/winter;
•          Huntington, West Va., fall/winter; and
•          Jeffersonville, Ind., fall/winter.

Inside the new stores, customer options will include. buy online pick-up in store service, curbside pick-up service and free shipping on online orders over $25.

In-store services will include free assembly of grills and bikes, scope mounting, bore sighting, line winding/spooling, propane exchange and the ability to purchase hunting and fishing licenses, the company said.
