Throwback Thursday: Wolf's distribution move

12/12/2018
The Dec. 15 2008 issue of Home Channel News, the forerunner of HBSDealer, carried the five-column headline: "Wolf Organization sells retail business."

The story explained how York, Pa.-based Wolf Organization, parent company of four-unit The Lumber Yard chain, decided to get out of retail and focus on its more successful distribution business. Times were tough in the lumberyard business in 2009, as the housing "continued to tank."  The Lumber Yard at one time had 18 unites in 5 Mid Atlantic states, but half the locations were closed in 2008.

John H. Myers & Son purchased two of The Lumber Yard locations, and had good news for the employees at the time. "We're hiring everybody upfront," said Bob Myers III of John H. Myers & Son. ""They've got some long-tim, knowledgeable people."

Myers joined US LBM Holdings in 2011.

After severing formal ties with the Wolf Organization, former CEO Tom Wolf was elected governor of Pennsylvania in 2014. He was re-elected in 2018.
