During the course of research for HBSDealer’s Hardware Store All Star program, HBSDealer editors happened upon an historic and delightful video throwback to the late 1930s. In the video, uniformed Westinghouse servicemen interact with the staff of McAuliffe Bros. A playful hardware store dog steals several scenes.

The human stars of the film — John and Jerry McAuliffe, the original McAuliffe brothers — are the great uncles of Dan Fitzgerald, who represents the third generation of ownership, as his son Sean represents the fourth.

Dan explains the origins of the video:

“There was a local photographer who filmed all around our town in the late 30’s,” he said. “The segment you are looking at was of John and Jerry McAuliffe, the founders of the company and my great uncles. Our company has had several locations over the years and that was one from the late depression era.”

Today, McAuliffe’s Ace Hardware operates out of an ultra-modern 30,000 sq. ft. retail footprint in Marysville on the edge of town. You can watch the full timeline of the store’s history here.
