Throwback Thursday: Mead means business

9/18/2019
Mead Lumber was founded in 1910 when Morton Mead bought Pankhurst Lumber Company in Ashland, Neb. The company later moved its headquarters to Columbus, Neb., where it today manages a fleet of 44 diverse locations across eight states of the Great Plains.

Mead Lumber, as announced this summer, will accept the 2019 HBSDealer ProDealer of the Year Award during the upcoming ProDealer Industry Summit in Colorado Springs, Colo., set for Oct. 8-10.

In this historic picture, Morton Mead's son Lyman Mead stands on the left wearing a tie. The year was 1943, more or less. The company at the time clearly had interests in the coal business, as well as extreme proximity to the railroad.

For the company's 100th anniversary in 2010, Lyman's son Bob Mead explained to the Columbus Telegraph newspaper the company's success and longevity. “The main thing that helped us survive the years is that we changed as the markets changed. When we saw a need in the markets we moved in those directions, and here we are 100 years later.”
