Throwback Thursday: Busy in Pittsburgh

10/2/2019
The Oct. 3, 1988 issue of National Home Center News, the forerunner of HBSDealer, included a photograph of a particularly well-dressed group of home center operators.

Under a headline of "Busy Beaver Grand Opening," the caption reads:

Company President Chuck Bender saws the ceremonial cutting board in front of the chain's newest unit, a 30,000 sq. foot home center that is its ninth in Pittsburgh. Standing with Bender at the Sept. 1 opening were Hampton township manager Christopher Lachner; the townships building inspector George Schmidt, Busy Beaver's VP-merchandising Art Sand; and vp-operations Virginia Fleishner. The store pulled in the highest weekend sales of any of the chain's Pittsburgh units.

Busy Beaver continues to build on its home improvement industry success story. Under owner Joe Kallen, who acquired the retailer in 2013 when it had 14 stores, Busy Beaver today operates 21 stores in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia. It employs more than 400 people.
