NPD Stat of the Week: L&G sales

Positive signs from this spring's lawn and garden activity.
7/20/2021

STAT: Through April, total lawn and garden sales were up 3% in 2021 compared to the same period in 2020. However, after strong March growth of 14%, April results declined 6% versus 2020 but are up 10% when compared to 2019. The April loss came from both a decrease in number of buyers as well as a decrease in spend per buyer. Digging deeper, the buyer decline occurred among those who purchased lawn and garden only online, while the number of in-store buyers grew compared to last year – a sign that shoppers are feeling optimistic about going back to stores.

ANALYSIS: “In April 2020, consumers were in the early stages of the socially-distant life, making them more hesitant to shop in-store, which led to online growth," said Joe Derochowski, Home Industry Advisor, The NPD Group. "In April 2021, as we hit 100M+ vaccinated consumers, we are growing increasingly more comfortable shopping both in-store and online to meet our needs.”
