Openings and closings from coast to coast

Here’s a selection of recent hardware-and-building-supply store openings, closings and acquisitions from around the country.

• Opening: Brothers Matt and Mark Beverly will open Beverly’s Ace Hardware in New Holland, Ga. The 29,000-square-foot store will stock Bass Pro Shop items, along with its core hardware offering, gifts and home décor. The store plans a Jan. 7 opening, and a grand opening Feb. 21. • Opened: Carr Hardware opened in Lenox, Mass. The 11,000-square-foot store is designed for the Lenox community, according to Carr Hardware President Bart Raser. The opening marks the fifth Carr store in the Berkshires and the eighth in New England overall. Carr will celebrate a grand opening in Lenox in May. (Source: The Berkshire Edge)

• Closed: An Opelousas, La., hardware store closed after a 141-year run. J.B. Sandoz Hardware Store first opened in 1878. The owners of the Main Street retailer said big box home stores and online retailers made it hard to compete. (Source: KATC News.)

• Opened: Alamo Lumber moved into a building formerly occupied by a Walmart in Edna, Texas, about 100 miles south of Houston. The news made the front page of the New York Times in an article under the headline: “The Town that Lost its Walmart.” (Source: The New York Times.)
