New York halts non-essential construction
Gov. Andrew Cuomo has issued a statewide ban on non-essential construction in New York.
The move puts an immediate halt to most of the residential and commercial construction projects in New York, which is the state hardest hit by the coronavirus.
With more than 46,000 cases, New York State has been dubbed the U.S. epicenter of the coronavirus epidemic.
Essential construction that can continue to operate includes roads, bridges, transit facilities, utilities, hospitals or health care facilities, affordable housing, and homeless shelters.
Those not complying with the new mandates can face a fine of up to $10,000 per violation.
Under the updated guidelines, essential retail can remain open.
This includes hardware, appliance and building material stores, along with grocery stores, pharmacies, farmer’s markets, convenience store, gas stations, and pet food retailers.
The latest mandate is part of the New York on PAUSE program, which includes all non-essential workers in the state being told to work from home. A statewide school closure has been extended to April 15 while all non-essential gatherings of individuals of any size have been banned. Residents seeking fresh air and a break from being indoors are instructed to keep a six-foot distance from other individuals.
While total U.S. cases have reached more than 100,000, New York City has nearly 27,000 as of March 28.
