The National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association (NLBMDA) is encouraging members to reach out and meet with their elected officials while they are back in their states and districts next month.

According to the NLBMDA, August recess is the best time of year for face-to-face interaction with members of Congress and there are numerous ways to engage elected officials. This includes inviting legislators to tour your lumberyard, requesting a meeting in their district office, or attending a local town hall.

The NLBMDA also said that If you are unable to meet with your Member of Congress in person, a virtual meeting may be a possibility.

Grassroots advocacy by NLBMDA members is crucial to ensuring that the lumber and building material (LBM) dealer industry’s priorities are reflected in legislation passed by Congress.

NLBMDA said that its staff is happy to support you in providing the tools you need to engage your elected official during the extended break. Below you will find a complete list of resources to help ensure that you are able to have meaningful and productive meetings with your Members of Congress. Ways to Meet Your Lawmakers During the August Recess:

  1. Lumberyard Tour: Invite your members of Congress to tour your yard. Show them what your operation entails, how your company operates and what your employees do on a daily basis. Yard tours are a great way for lawmakers to meet you and your employees, hear about your company’s success and see first-hand how their votes impact your business.
  2. District Office Meeting: Meet with your members of Congress and their staff at their district office so that you can discuss NLBMDA's legislative priorities with them face-to-face.
  3. Town Hall: Attend a town hall or other local event hosted by a member of Congress. These meetings may not be heavily attended and are another way for you to speak with your elected officials.
  4. Virtual Meeting: Schedule a virtual meeting with your Members of Congress.
