Wood remains the leader in exterior trim

12/10/2019
Geography has a significant impact on material selection in the residential exterior trim market in part because architectural styles vary regionally. Trim products also vary by region because regional climates vary widely. Different materials are suitable for a given climate because they have varying ability to withstand moisture or are better equipped to withstand thermal contraction.

  • Accounting for 42% of U.S. residential exterior trim demand (by linear feet), wood remains the most prevalent trim material, but share has declined over the years from 46% in 2014. Wood trim is relatively inexpensive, and the trade is comfortable working with it.

  • Vinyl trim accounts for 18% of exterior trim demand. Demand follows similar usage patterns of vinyl siding with concentration in the Northeast and Midwest.

  • Engineered wood comprises 17% of national exterior trim demand and is more common in the western and central parts of the country where it has a strong attachment rate coupled with engineered wood siding.

  • Cellular PVC exterior trim has an 11% share and is most prevalent in the Northeast, Midwest, and along the Gulf Coast where its rot resistance withstands harsh weather and moisture.
