Weyerhaeuser cautiously closes Seattle headquarters

3/4/2020
Weyerhaeuser has temporarily closed its headquarters in Seattle over concerns of the spreading coronavirus.

The forest products and timberlands company made the decision earlier this week. About 700 employees work at Weyerhaeuser’s headquarters, including many who use mass transportation to get to work on a daily basis.

In a statement issued to HBSDealer, Weyerhaeuser said, “This week, we made the decision to have our Seattle employees telecommute for at least one week. We’re doing this out of an abundance of caution, since so many of our people commute via mass transit.”

Since the outbreak of the coronavirus, 9 people have died in the United States – all in Washington state. Nearly 130 people in 16 states have been infected by the disease.

“We have not had any known cases of COVID-19 at any of our operations. We will continue to monitor the situation and update our plans as needed in the coming days and weeks,” Weyerhaeuser said.

The company has also placed limits on travel for its employees.

Globally, more than 93,000 cases have been reported along with over 3,200 deaths.
