West Fraser cuts back SPF production

1/15/2019
West Fraser, the forest products producer, is curtailing operations for 3 weeks at each of its mills in British Columbia.

The Vancouver, British Columbia-based company said the move will take place at its Chasm, 100 Mile House, and Chetwynd operations. The temporary moves will take place during the first quarter of 2019. Also, the Williams Lake Sawmill will be shut down for approximately a week to complete certain capital upgrades.

The decision to temporarily reduce production at Chasm, 100 Mile House, and Chetwynd is a result of price declines in lumber markets, high log costs, and log supply constraints, West Fraser said.

Total production curtailed in the first quarter of the year is expected to reduce SPF lumber production by approximately 50 million board feet. The same four mills halted production in December, resulting in a reduction of 25 million board feet.

West Fraser produces lumber, LVL, MDF, plywood, pulp, newsprint, and wood chips with locations in western Canada and the southern U.S.

West Fraser isn’t alone in cutting back operations this winter. Canfor – also based in Vancouver, British Columbia – extended its curtailment at sawmills in the region this past December. The company also said it was reducing operating hours at some sawmills throughout the first quarter of 2019. The company said the curtailment would result in a reduction of 55 million board feet in its first quarter.
