Retail sales slip in February

Retail sales took a step back in February, according to the latest report from the Department of Commerce.

Advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for February 2020, adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day differences, but not for price changes, were $528.1 billion, a decrease of 0.5% compared to adjusted sales of $530.9 billion for January.

The latest report is 4.3% above February 2019 sales of $506.1 billion, however.

Total sales for the December 2019 through February 2020 period were up 4.9% from the same period a year ago. The December 2019 to January 2020 percent change was revised from up 0.3% to up 0.6%.

Sales for building material and lawn and garden retailers (Line 444) slipped 1.3% in February to $32.84 billion from January sales of $33.27 billion. Sales are up 5.1% compared to sales in February 2019.
