PPG to close a Texas paint plant

Loss of distribution at Lowe’s stores factors into decision.

PPG Architectural Coatings Finishes plans to shut down a paint factory in Houston, Texas.

According to an article in the Houston Business Journal, the plant will close its doors for good on Feb. 28, 2019, after months of winding down.

In a letter to the Texas Workforce Commission in compliance with the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, PPG said the closure is the “result of multiple factors, including overcapacity, slow overall growth and loss of distribution at Lowe’s.”

In February, Lowe’s tightened its relationship with Sherwin-Williams, a move that is pushing PPG and its Olympic line of paints and stains off the shelves by mid 2018.

PPG has about 50 facilities around the country focused on manufacturing or research and development, or both.
