Here’s another reason to read the international section of the newspaper: the escalation of a U.S.-China trade dispute is raising concerns among home improvement dealers and their vendors.

According to the latest HBSDealer poll question, the escalation presents a clear and present challenge. HBSDealer asked: “Is your business challenged by the latest escalation of the U.S.-China trade dispute?”

Among retailers and distributors, 68, responded “Yes,” and 21 responded  “No.”

Among manufacturers, 48 responded “Yes,” and 10 responded “No.”

Last week, the United States raised tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods to 25%. On Monday, China returned serve, upping its tariffs on U.S.-made goods to 20% – 25%, effective June 1.

Companies that compete against Chinese imports stand to gain from the escalating trade tension, but economists warn that the economy could take a hit. Negotiations are continuing as the U.S. draws up the papers to raise tariffs on the remaining goods imported from China.
