No more free popcorn

5/17/2018
Meanley & Son Hardware in La Jolla, Calif. has done away with the free popcorn it offered customers for more nearly 25 years.

After a crackdown from health officials, Meanley & Son was told it did not have the proper permits to dispense the popcorn.

If it wanted to continue the tradition, the hardware store would have follow the 1984 California Uniform Retail Food Facility Law and install a three-basin sink to clean and sterilize the popcorn popper. Instead, Meanley & Son decided to place its popcorn machine in storage.

And the great popcorn crackdown is impacting more than just hardware stores in the region, according to a report by the San Diego Tribune.
