LP's FlameBlock expands its safety accreditation

LP FlameBlock Fire-Rated Oriented Strand Board (OSB) Sheathing is now included in the CAL FIRE Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) Products Handbook, published by the California Office of the State Fire Marshall, for use in roof decking exposed as open eaves.

FlameBlock satisfies the WUI rules for use in the underside of open eaves through its CAL FIRE “low ignition surface” classification, which is granted based on the product’s Class A flame spread rating.

Use of LP FlameBlock in this application creates design flexibility by affording designers and builders a wider range of material options, while also providing a potentially more cost effective means of meeting WUI standards. In addition, an assembly utilizing LP FlameBlock panels with tongue-and-groove cedar or redwood boards was recently added to the WUI Products Handbook as approved construction for use in boxed soffit applications. The assembly, consisting of 15/32 category FlameBlock installed behind the T&G soffit ceiling boards, earned approval by passing CAL-FIRE’s stringent SFM 12-7A-3 soffit fire test.

“With the new LP FlameBlock Sheathing eave and soffit code approvals, California builders can have even more confidence in using FlameBlock to provide fire protection for homeowners,” said Judy Musgrove, OSB marketing manager. “In addition, the product is durable, easy to work with and installs like regular roof decking, making it a cost-effective, easy way for builders to meet codes.”
