ABOUT THE TOP 300


The 2014 Industry Scoreboard tracks sales, store count, employee count and other data for the most recently completed fiscal year. Data sources include S.E.C. filings of publicly traded companies, company interviews and a digital HCN Industry Scoreboard Survey that was launched March 17.

6. Sherwin-Williams: During the year, Paint Stores Group continued to grow in geographic reach and store density, opening 82 net new stores and adding the 306 Comex store locations.



7. Tractor Supply: Entered three new states, adding stores for the first time in Arizona, Nevada and Wyoming.

19. Lumber Liquidators: Operated 52 “store of the future” locations at the end of the fiscal year, featuring expanded show- rooms and updated designs.



24. Orchard Supply Hardware: Lowe’s acquired 72 Orchard Supply stores in August 2013 for $205 million in cash, plus the assumption of payables. Orchard Supply operates as a separate, standalone business.



38. Foxworth-Galbraith: Created a well-received rewards program for DIY customers.



40. Westlake Ace Hardware: Acquired by Ace Hardware in late 2012. In early 2014, the company named Tom Knox to replace George Smith as the CEO of the retailer.



53. Kodiak Building Supplies: Acquired Factory Builder Stores in April 2014, Jones-Heartz Drywall Supply in December 2013 and New England Building Supply in June 2013.



58. Dunn-Edwards Corp.: Expanded Professional Paint Advisor initiative from 30 stores to more than 40 stores.



90. Great Lakes Ace: Formerly ACO Stores, the all-Michigan chain closed 14 underperforming stores in May 2013, and began the transition to the Ace co-op in early 2014.
