Founder of Ames Research Labs, dead at 76

William Ames Curtright, founder of Ames Research Labs and known throughout the home improvement industry as “Dr. Ames,” died March 6. He was 76.

Ames is the maker of Blue Max waterproof coating.

The cause of death was a heart attack, according to the company.

Curtright founded Salem, Ore.-based Ames Research Laboratories in 1997, and became successful inventing and distributing waterproof coatings for commercial and residential use. Ames products are sold in 15,000 retail locations, the company said.

The business card of Dr. Ames included a quote from Fisher Ames, a co-author of the Constitution.

Curtright also invented the Snow Roof System at Oregon Research and Development, a company he started in 1981.

In accordance with the company’s succession plan, Dama Curtright has taken over as president & CEO of Ames Research Laboratories, Inc. She was formerly vice president. She was the wife of Dr. Ames for 30 years, and also involved in the operations at Oregon Research and Development.
