CanWel acquiring Lignum Forest Products

3/28/2019
CanWel Building Materials Group is acquiring Lignum Forest Products, a lumber marketing and distribution business, from Conifex.

Conifex said the sale is for roughly US$11.5 million and is expected to close in April. All three companies are based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

According to CanWel, the acquisition "further solidifies and complements its existing North American distribution capabilities and reach with existing and new customers."

“Lignum is a well-respected brand in many of our markets and we are extremely pleased to be able to further solidify our North American lumber marketing and distribution capabilities with this acquisition,” said Amar Doman, chairman and CEO of CanWel.

CanWel's distribution locations include centers in Oregon and California.

CanWel operates multiple treating plant and planing facilities in Canada and the United States. The company also operates distribution centers across Canada along with facilities in Portland, Ore.; San Francisco; and Los Angeles. In addition to owning about 136,000 acres of timberland, CanWel also operates 14 Honsador Building Products locations in Hawaii.

With locations in British Columbia and the southern U.S., Conifex manufactures structural grade SPF dimension lumber and Southern Pine decking and dimensional lumber.

Conifex acquired Lignum in January 2016.

Ken Shields, Conifex president and CEO, said recent acquisitions resulted in a shift in direction for Conifex and Lignum.

“As we worked over the past several months capturing the synergies and integrating our two acquired US South mills into Conifex, it became apparent to us that Lignum’s strength in lumber marketing and distribution would be well positioned for the future under the guidance of a company with a good reputation and with a single focus on marketing forest products,” Shields said.
