Canfor extends British Columbia slowdown

12/19/2018
Canfor, the Vancouver-based forest products and lumber giant, has extended its curtailment at sawmills in British Columbia.

The company also said it is reducing operating hours at some sawmills throughout the first quarter of 2019.

The company said the decision is based on a continuing decline in lumber prices, along with the high cost of logs and log supply constraints.

The curtailment extension and reduction in operating hours is expected to reduce Canfor’s production output by an additional 55 million board feet in the first quarter. The mills are scheduled to resume production on Jan. 7, 2019.

Altogether, Canfor operates 13 sawmills in Canada with a total annual capacity of approximately 3.8 billion board feet.

The company primarily produces softwood lumber and also maintains operations in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
