Medley’s Hardware co-owners Tim and Kathy Medley, cut the ribbon on their second store in Sullivan, Indiana, while their son James, the new store manager (seen in grey shirt at back right), looks on with family pride.

Medley’s Hardware, a Do it Best dealer, celebrated the opening of its second store, this one in Sullivan, Ind., the company reported. The owners noted they had some much-needed local help to open their doors.

“We live in a supportive, tight-knit community,” said Tim Medley, owner of Medley’s Hardware. “Before we opened, the local fire department helped us stock shelves. The county government also contributed funds from the local Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district to improve our parking lot and add a curb cut, making it safer for our delivery truck drivers and customers.

“Because of their support,” he pointed out, “we were able to open our doors on time.”

How it came to be: Tim and his wife Kathy Medley first started thinking of expanding their business and had their eyes on the nearby town of Sullivan.

Their first store, Carlisle Hardware, located in Carlisle, Indiana, had just celebrated its 20th anniversary in business as a Do it Best member, when Tim Medley notice a “Gear Up 4 Growth” flier — and it gave him ideas.

With expansion in mind, he reached out to Russ Goerlitz, his territory sales manager, and said to him: “I’ve always wanted to open a second location. How can we make that happen?”

From there, the Medley’s identified a location and, “worked with Goerlitz to leverage his Gear Up 4 Growth options,” said Do it Best, adding that the owners then, “acquired a retail performance loan to make it happen.”

The Medley’s took steps to upgrade and refurbish the building they chose for their expansion. “Tim and Kathy have taken a big step to improve and grow their business,” said Do it Best.

The Sullivan community was excited for the hardware store coming, the company indicated.

So much so that even when supply chain challenges that disrupted the entire hardware industry threatened to postpone the store’s opening, the community jumped in to help.

The local fire department wasted no time pitching in to stock products on shelves, the firm related. Even the county government contributed funds to improve the conditions of the store’s location, it said.

“We look forward to repaying the community by offering exceptional service and products for years to come,” added Tim Medley.
