Carr Hardware President Bart Raser says the retailer’s newest store – Carr Paint & Decorating Center in Springfield, Mass. – is the beginning of something special.
It’s also the first Benjamin Moore “Store of the Future” format for Carr Hardware, which also operates six other hardware stores in Massachusetts and Connecticut. The new store is a state-of-the-art collaboration with Benjamin Moore and will exclusively carry an expanded line of premium and professional grade Benjamin Moore products.

Raser describes the new store as a one-stop home decor shop for the homeowner or the pro. Carr Paint stocks the full line of fine Graber brand window treatments and offers in-home measuring, consultation and professional installation. Also featured are indoor and outdoor rugs by Kaleen, top quality rugs with fashion-forward designs.
Paint, color and design offerings are critical business components for today’s independent hardware stores, as they provide services that can’t easily be replicated by digital competitors. And in the hands of a well-trained and experienced staff, a colorful paint department generates traffic.

“I think paint is a critically important part of our business,” Raser told HBSDealer. “It’s a critical strategic focus of the business. It’s a service not available through Amazon, and that’s great for us. It has a positive effect on many other parts of the business.”

Benjamin Moore unveiled its Store of the Future program in 2017. The general store design concept condenses the inventory into different zones, including the Color Studio, Project Essentials, Theatre, Pro Zone and Warehouse.
The new Carr Paint is located at the Five Town Plaza, in the Sixteen Acres neighborhood of Springfield, bordering Wilbraham on Cooley Street.
Carr Hardware, a True Value dealer since 1970, is planning to open an eighth store in 2020.
