Hardware store saves post office, local zip code
When the U.S. Postal Service decided to close its office in Glenn, Mich. after losing its lease, residents of the town were also told they would also lose their zip code. Half of the community would be considered South Haven, and the other half north would have a Fennville mailing address, according to an article in the Kalamazoo Gazette.
Enter Glenn residents Robert and Vicki Amberg, owners of Gerstner Hardware in Glenn. The Ambergs proposed moving the post office into the hardware store as an alternative. The U.S. Postal Service said yes.
P.O. boxes had to be installed, ramps had to be built, and other logistics worked out. But now the Glenn Village Post Office — one of just five Village Post Offices in the country — will allow local residents to keep the town and the zip code they’ve always had: Glenn, Mich., 49416.

Cole Hardware builds on community program
San Francisco-based Cole Hardware’s Community Partner Assistance Program, now in its 17th year, is expanding through a gift registry to include groups that can register for needed supplies or ongoing wish lists.
"We are happy to be a part of the San Francisco community and are pleased to assist the schools and non-profits in San Francisco doing their part to make our city the best place to live," said Julia Strzesieski, marketing coordinator for Cole Hardware.
The registry may be used for improvement projects and can include paint and supplies or cleaning products. Schools and community gardens can also register for gardening supplies. Cole will set up the registry, and the community can easily access the group’s wish list and purchase online any of the items on their list or a gift card.
Cole Hardware also has an ongoing Spare Change Program. In August they participated with other independent hardware retailers across the county in collecting spare change for the Children’s Miracle Network and collected more than $500. In October, they collected spare change for Bay Area Young Survivors, a support group for breast cancer survivors and presented the group with a check for more than $800.
San Francisco is one of the
San Francisco is one of the most beautiful cities here in USA. I always go back there to visit and I can't get enough of it. I saw a link on www.trendmicro.com for this program and this is how I found out about it. I was always impressed by the cleanliness in san Francisco and I think Cole Hardware's Community Partner Assistance Program is a very good initiative.
