Hacking for Homebuilding: the winners

Big ideas for construction innovation emerge, again, in Idaho.

An effort to cultivate economic growth and building industry startups in and around Boise, Idaho, produced a plethora of innovative ideas and a handful of winners in the Hacking for Homebuilding contest.

Big ideas included job-site security and communication simplicity.

The event was described by Levi Smith, president of Boise-based Franklin Building Supply and one of the events founders and organizers, as part of a “vision for a home construction related startup ecosystem in Idaho."

Organized in concert with Boise State University and Boise Entrepreneur Week, the event led to the selection of six winners in two tracks, one for students and one for the public at large.

Public track winners:

• Flashpoint Building Systems: a process that laser engraves building information and plans directly onto the subfloor sheathing.
• Revonate: Three-dimensional modeling software to save time on remodel projects and to ensure consistent profit margins.
• CrewNotes by BetaCanon, is a communication tool to share product and project knowledge throughout the construction process.

Student Track winners:

• VandalEyes: A jobsite security system that protects the jobs site and links and alerts owner, police and insurance company.
• Site Seer: a solution. Protecting equipment trailers on job sites from theft, while protecting the site from vandalism,
• NeighborWood Surplus. Helps contractors manage job site waste, while offering affordable construction materials to the public.

Industry sponsors included Franklin Building Supply, Midwest Building Products, Boise Cascade, J.M. Thomas Forest Products, Therma-Tru Doors and Trimco Willwork.

Partners included Weyerhaeuser, IKO, LP Building Solutions and OrePac Building Products.
