People of the Year: Gina Schaefer
Gina Schaefer was recently recognized as a member of an elite group: 100 Truly Amazing Women who are changing the world.
High praise. But that’s no surprise to her colleagues at Ace Hardware, who know her as the energetic CEO of Logan Hardware, operator of 11 Ace Hardware stores in and around the nation’s capitol. Together they form A Few Cool Hardware Stores, a collection of stores dedicated to being helpful and being a good neighbor, among other things.
In addition to serving on the Ace board, Schaefer was elected to the board of CCA Global, the flooring industry giant. She’s also on the board of House of Ruth, which provides services to women and children who are homeless or victims of domestic violence. Schaefer is a full-time ambassador of the friendly neighborhood hardware store.

Throwback Thursday: Hitched in Hardware
The March 20, 2006 issue of Home Channel News, the forerunner of HBSDealer, included an article on page six that proves an old adage: this really is a relationship business.
Under a headline: “Couple says ‘I do’ at Orgill market,’ comes the story of flower shop owner Lorraine Mayer and home renovator Charles Parsons. The two were married, the story goes, “against a backdrop of designer retaining walls, bubbling fountains and rows of potted plants… And what started as a gathering of just a few close friends turned into quite the spectacle, as both Orgill reps and show-goers stopped to witness the ceremony.”
Efforts to reach the couple for comments on their 10-year anniversary were unsuccessful.
Sears Hometown opens inside Heritage Ace Hardware
Among the retail strategies employed by Sears Hometown and Outlet Stores to turn around its business, the store-within-a-store concept might rank as the most inventive.
Sears Hometown and Outlet Stores have been cropping up inside existing Ace locations around the country (and in some cases, built from the ground up as a combo store).
The latest example of this is taking place in Santa Paula, California, inside the Heritage Ace Hardware located at 568 Suite C West Main Street.
“This is an exciting time of year to unveil to our loyal customers the addition of Sears Hometown Store home appliance product lines inside of Heritage Ace Hardware,” said Ray Padgett, owner of the Sears Hometown Store in Santa Paula. “We’ve improved the shopping experience with in-store kiosks for shopping online and a knowledgeable sales team that is up-to-date on the latest features from the most popular home appliance brands. We hope that the community will stop by the new store for their holiday shopping needs.”
The unique store format makes major Sears brands more available to customers in small communities. According to the company, the new Santa Paula location is the only place in town where customers can find brands such as Kenmore, Maytag, KitchenAid, Whirlpool, Bosch, Frigidaire and GE.
This marks the 16th new Sears Hometown Store opening this year, as well as the 17th new store across all Sears Hometown and Outlet Stores formats.
