Wood Resources promotes former WY exec

BY Brae Canlen

Wood Resources, a company that makes wood panels for residential and commercial construction, has appointed Kurt Liebich as president and CEO, as well as group executive for wood products for parent company Atlas Holdings. Liebich will also continue in his current role as president and CEO of RedBuilt, Atlas’ wood-based structural solutions company.

Liebich joined RedBuilt’s predecessor, Trus Joist, in 1994 and served in numerous senior management roles in finance, marketing, production and operations, helping to grow the company into a billion-dollar business. He remained with the company when Weyerhauser acquired it in 1999, and was appointed VP of the Trus Joist division in 2005 before his promotion to VP marketing for iLevel. When Atlas Holdings acquired the former commercial division of Trus Joist from Weyerhauser in 2009, it appointed Liebich as president and CEO of the company which they named RedBuilt.

Simultaneous with Liebich’s appointment, Richard Yarbrough, who has led Wood Resources since its founding in 2003, has been named chairman of the board. Previous chairman William Corbin will remain actively involved on Wood Resources’ board as chairman of the executive committee. Both men are also members of RedBuilt’s board.

Wood Resources produces specialty and commodity plywood through its three operating companies: Moncure Plywood in Moncure, N.C.; Chester Wood Products in Chester, S.C.; and Olympic Panel Products in Shelton, Wash. Each company serves unique segments of the market for wood panels, which are also used in industrial applications. RedBuilt is a leading supplier of engineered lumber products based in Boise, Idaho.

Atlas Holdings chairman and managing partner Andrew Bursky said, in a prepared statement: “The steps we have taken today are strategically important to Wood Resources and RedBuilt. There are tremendous synergies both companies can realize under Kurt’s expert guidance. For instance, the businesses will be able to take a more holistic approach to developing raw material sourcing strategies in the western United States. Given the pending economic recovery, sourcing raw materials is one of the top strategic priorities for both companies over the next five years.”

Based in Greenwich, Conn., Atlas Holdings is engaged in a broad spectrum of industries, including food and agriculture, wood products and building materials, pulp and paper manufacturing, packaging, capital equipment, and industrial and business services. Atlas Holdings specializes in the purchase of middle-market companies, via carve-outs and corporate divestitures, and works closely with its Operating Partners and management teams to build strong companies that can sustain long-term success.

APA to oversee glulam standards

BY Brae Canlen

The American Institute of Timber Construction has transferred three American National Standards to APA – The Engineered Wood Association, effective Jan. 1, 2013. The standards include:

  • American National Standard for Wood Products, Structural Glued Laminated Timber
  • American National Standard, Standard for Adhesives for use in Structural Glued Laminated Timber
  • American National Standard, Standard Specification for Structural Glued Laminated Timber of Softwood Species

All three have been renamed with new ANSI numbers.

“We’re pleased to take the responsibility for these standards, which are vital to the glulam industry,” said APA president Dennis Hardman. “We’re taking steps to ensure a smooth transition of the standards committee and to provide uninterrupted support to the industry with up-to-date product standards and design specifications.”

APA is a national standards developer accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and has a long and extensive history in building codes and standards development activities. APA also serves as a third-party quality auditing and testing agency. Headquartered in Tacoma, Wash., the organization operates a 42,000-sq.-ft. research center focused on engineered wood products. A regional quality testing laboratory is also located in Atlanta.

BMC recognizes salesman of the year

BY Ken Clark

Las Vegas — During the BMC National Meeting here at the M Resort, the Boise, Idaho-based pro dealer stressed team building and education.

BMC also identified outstanding individual performances. The 88-unit pro dealer recognized Christopher Cysensky as Platinum Salesman of the Year. Cysensky is the outside sales representative for the Pacific Northwest, working in the company’s Tacoma, Wash., location. The performance-based award was given Tuesday night during the Sales Awards Ceremony and Dinner.

Cysensky, who began his career as forklift driver, led BMC in both sales volume and sales margin dollars.

During the awards ceremony, Pacific Northwest market sales manager Wayne Mangan, who hired Cysensky as a salesman 18 years ago, introduced the award-winner as soft-spoken, dependable and motivated. "He said, ‘if you give me the job, I will do my best to be your No. 1 sales person someday,’ " Mangan recalled.

The four-day national sales meeting brought together some 365 BMC field staff to talk strategy and motivation — the theme for the event was "Leading America’s Homebuilding Recovery." Some 140 vendors were present to show their wares at the BMC Trade Show. And a group of about 1,500 — including builders, architects and vendors — gathered in a ballroom Thursday night for a performance of Vegas entertainer Gordie Brown.

Breakout sessions of the Jan. 8-11 event included product knowledge presentations, along with a healthy dose of iPad training and best practice classes. The iPads are the equipment to carry out BMC2GO, the pro dealer’s sales and communication effort for field staff.

Last year, BMC received the 2012 Pro Dealer of the Year Award, presented during the 2012 ProDealer Industry Summit.
