Weyerhaeuser triples size of Virginia DC

Weyerhaeuser has added 70,000 sq. ft. of warehouse space to its Richmond, Va., distribution center, tripling the facility’s inside storage.

The company will use the space to support distribution of additional third-party products, including vendor managed inventory (VMI) of more than 150 SKUs of James Hardie siding and trim products, as well as 100 SKUs of cedar decking, landscaping, siding and trim. Weyerhaeuser also anticipates supplying will supply pine flooring from Trout River Lumber. Additionally, the company will be hiring more people at the facility in both operations and sales positions, and is expanding its delivery fleet size. These actions are intended to provide enhanced service to customers in Virginia, eastern West Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. 

Jeff Waterhouse, Weyerhaeuser area general manager, said the additional investment in people, products and facilities underscores the company’s commitment to dealers in the Mid-Atlantic region. “It all comes down to helping our customers be more successful, providing them with the products they need on time and in full, along with support services to grow their business,” he said.

Headquartered in Federal Way, Wash., Weyerhaeuser is one of the largest building material distributors in the nation. The company operates 30 distribution facilities throughout the United States, offering construction and finishing materials ranging from manufactured structural framing, engineered wood, solid sawn lumber, plywood, oriented strand board (OSB), siding, trim, insulation, housewrap, decking, cultured stone and steel concrete reinforcing.

Obit: Charlie Blythe

Charlie “C.D.” Delano Blythe, a well-known figure in the southern wood products industry, passed away on Sept. 4. He was 74 years old.

According to his obituary, Blythe was employed as softwood sales manager for Coastal Lumber Co. in Weldon, N.C., between 1970 and 1998. During that time, he was responsible for the annual marketing of 140 million board feet of Southern Yellow Pine Lumber, 120 million feet of plywood and 60 million feet of pressure-treated lumber. Working with a staff of 18 lumber traders and associates, Blythe was instrumental in developing a market for these products throughout the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean Islands. 

Blythe also served on the boards of the Florida Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association, Florida Wood Council, Southern Forest Products Association and Southern Pine Council.

After retiring in 1998, Blythe moved to Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., and became involved in a number of service and cultural organizations. At the time of his death, he was serving as Mayor Pro Tem for the town of Ocean Isle Beach.

Surviving Blythe is his wife of 54 years, Carolyn Parker Blythe.

Armstrong sells Patriot Flooring Supply

Lancaster, Pa.-based Armstrong World Industries sold Patriot Flooring Supply to The Belknap White Group, a 35-year-old flooring distributor operating in New England and upstate New York.

The transaction closed on Sept. 1, 2012, the company announced Wednesday. Patriot, a flooring sales and distribution business that employs 65 people in Wilmington, Mass., and Pompton Plains, N.J., serves the New England, metropolitan New York and Northern New Jersey markets. 

Frank Ready, CEO of Armstrong Flooring Products, said in a prepared statement: "Armstrong’s strategy is to focus on our core businesses — flooring and ceilings. Patriot distributes hardwood and laminate flooring, and we’re in the business of making and marketing floors. So this is a strategic decision that makes sense for all three parties –Armstrong, Patriot and The Belknap White Group. With Patriot, Belknap can strengthen the operations of both businesses for the benefit of the customers they serve in the Northeast. And we will continue to drive our business in North America and around the world for the benefit of all of our stakeholders."
