Viance D-Blaze receives UL certification
D-Blaze fire-retardant treated wood is effective at controlling the spread of flame and smoke.
Viance has announced a new Underwriters Laboratories (UL and ULC) certification listing for two-hour bearing wall assemblies utilizing D-Blaze fire retardant treated lumber and plywood.
Design No. V335 was certified under the ANSI/UL 263 standard for the U.S. and CAN/ULC-S101 for Canada earning a two-hour fire resistance rating for walls exposed to fire on the interior face.
The two-hour rated fire-resistant bearing wall assembly, Design No. V335, is available at UL’s Online Certifications Directory, and will allow architects and specifiers to design FRTW walls with brick, stucco, fiber cement and other approved UL exterior facings.
D-Blaze fire-retardant treated wood (FRTW) is highly effective at controlling the spread of flame and smoke, increasing evacuation time and potentially reducing damages and repair costs caused by fire.
D-Blaze has been used in projects across North America, including the One World Trade Center in New York City and the Sears Tower and Navy Pier in Chicago.
Tested and listed by UL and ULC, D-Blaze FRTW meets the requirements of construction materials as set forth in all North American building codes for lumber and plywood products used in fire rated assemblies and interior applications where fire retardant construction materials are permitted and specified by building codes.
D-Blaze also received Greenguard Gold certification for meeting comprehensive standards for low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in indoor air.

WaterSense gets vote of confidence
The EPA’s WaterSense program is officially on the chopping block. But a recent move by the house committee that oversees EPA funding is making a stand for the program.
The House of Representatives’ Appropriations Committee, which oversees EPA funding, yesterday outlined its support of the EPA’s WaterSense program while rejecting its proposed elimination in a report accompanying its approved fiscal year 2019 (FY19) budget for the Departments of Interior and EPA.
Administered by the EPA, WaterSense is a voluntary, consumer product program that promotes water efficiency. The WaterSense label signifies that the product meets high performance standards while using at least 20 percent less water than products meeting federal water-efficiency standards.
The committee members supporting the program received applause from Plumbing Manufacturers International. The committee is led by Rep. Ken Calvert (R-Calif.), Interior/EPA Subcommittee chair. PMI and its members, along with a number of trade associations and non-governmental organizations, have met with dozens of members of Congress, including members of the Appropriations Committee, to underscore the benefits of the program, the group said. PMI is supporting similar report language in the Senate.
“We are pleased to continue to see bipartisan support on Capitol Hill of this successful water savings program vital to manufacturers, consumers, states, cities, and utilities,” said PMI CEO/Executive Director Kerry Stackpole. “Established is 2006, WaterSense is an example of an effective collaboration between industry and the government in determining voluntary and water-efficient performance measures that can be used by consumers and industry, as well as by states and local governments.”
In March, PMI delivered a letter to EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt highlighting the benefits of the WaterSense public-private partnership and strongly recommending its continuation. Earlier this year, the Trump Administration targeted 50 EPA programs for elimination, including the WaterSense program.
Plumbing manufacturers have developed more than 21,000 WaterSense-labeled product models, including showerheads, toilets, faucets, faucet accessories, flushing urinals, flushometer-valve toilets found in commercial and institutional facilities, and pre-rinse spray valves for commercial kitchens.
More than 1,900 manufacturers, water and energy utilities, distributors, state and local governments, non-profit organizations, trade associations, and retailers nationwide have partnered with the WaterSense program.

Texas management promotions at McCoy’s
Robert Paul and Joe Munoz have a 58 years of experience at McCoy's Building Supply.
McCoy’s Building Supply has announced its latest store manager appointments, including a duo of company veterans.
Joe Munoz has been appointed manager of the pro dealer’s Brazoria, Texas location and Robert Paul has been named manager of the company’s Richwood store.
Paul is a 28-year McCoy’s veteran with 23 years of management experience. Most recently he served as manager of the company’s Brazoria store where he focused on McCoy’s customer-centric approach to management, the company said.
“I’m really looking forward to getting to know the customers and crew in Richwood,” said Paul.
“I’ve worked with Robert for many years as he managed the Brazoria store and I’m excited for him to lead the Richwood,” said McCoy’s Regional Manager Ronnie Byrd said. “He knows McCoy’s inside and out and I know his crew is really pumped to help him grow the business.”
Munoz is a 20-year McCoy’s veteran with 13 years of management experience. He worked his way through a variety of store roles before stepping into management, where he focused on McCoy’s dedication to customer service, the company said. Most recently, Munoz was store manager of the McCoy’s store in Rosenberg
“I’m excited to be managing the Brazoria store,” reveals Munoz. “I’ve lived here for years so it’s great that I now get to serve the customers in my hometown.”
“I’m really excited to have Joe managing the Brazoria store,” Byrd said. “That’s my Saturday shopping store, so I’m looking forward to seeing him while I’m shopping as a customer as well as getting to work with him as we continue to grow the business.”
McCoy’s operates 86 stores and two millwork facilities in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi and New Mexico.
