Versatile Nebraska home center earns Golden Hammer

BY Ken Clark

Kearney, Neb.-based Builders will accept the 2013 “Tools of the Trade Award” during the National Hardware Show, to be held in Las Vegas May 7-9.

Builders operates a professional lumberyard/home center and full-line countertop manufacturing facility in Kearney, Neb.; a  professional lumberyard with design center and truss plant, in Grand Island, Neb.; and a contractor/pro sales office and truss plant in Denver.

The company, a member of the Fort Wayne, Ind.-based Do it Best co-op, has demonstrated an ability to reach both homeowners and home builders in its various formats. A specific hit with customers has been a recent Ladies Night event that attracted more than 600 people. The company also reaches out to customers as the host of a Traeger Nationals grilling competition.

The Tools of the Trade award recognizes a hardware and home improvement store that champions innovation and best practices across their operation to generate results and connect with customers.

“Builders is a small company that clearly has ambitious formats,” said HCN editor Ken Clark. “There are lot of larger companies that can learn from how Builders successfully combines its pro and DIY businesses.”

Past “Tools of the Trade” honorees include McDaniel’s Do it of Snohomish, Wash. (2012); Price Hardware of Atlanta, Texas (2011); and Cole’s Home Solutions of Millington, Tenn. (2010).

The Golden Hammer Awards breakfast will take place during the National Hardware Show on the morning of May 8. For more information about the National Hardware Show, click here.

Oldcastle acquires Harmony Outdoor Products

BY Ken Clark

Oldcastle Architectural has acquired Harmony Outdoor Products, expanding the company’s Belgard Hardscapes collection to include a full suite of pre-built modular hardscape elements for every outdoor living setting, the company said.

“This acquisition is a strong strategic fit for our Belgard business and our commitment to bring contractors and installers solutions that will help them serve their customers and grow their businesses,” said Keith Haas, CEO for Oldcastle Architectural.

Oldcastle first partnered with Harmony Outdoor Products four years ago to offer contractors the option of the Belgard Elements Collection of modular fire features, water features, grill stations and kitchen islands; the pre-built structures integrate with Belgard Hardscapes paver and wall block for a seamless look and unparalleled design detail of outdoor spaces.

With this acquisition, Oldcastle said it will be able to expand Elements Collection design offerings and increase accessibility through Belgard’s broad geographic reach.

Earlier this week, Oldcastle announced the acquisition of Expocrete Concrete Products based in Edmonton, Canada.

"The flea and tick control section of pet stores and retailers needed a boost from true product innovation. The new Adams Smart Shield Applicator gave us a great platform to differentiate the Adams brand and stand out on the shelf," said Steve LeVeau, director of marketing for Central Garden & Pet’s Animal Health division. "Our ‘Smarter Pet Care’ communication strategy, driven by TV, print, in-store and digital media, drove outstanding dollar sales growth."

The Adams Smart Shield Applicator is a topical flea and tick control delivery device designed to work with Adams Spot On products. The patent-pending design is easy to grip, helps part fur for direct application to the pet’s skin and effectively keeps liquid off hands.
