True Value’s IT team wins award

True Value Co.’s information technology team earned recognition from the Chicago chapters of the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP) and the Society for Information Management (SIM)

Chicago-based True Value took home the 2013 CIO’s Most Effective IT Team Award in the large company category.

The program consists of a nomination phase, a qualifying and detailed application process, and a peer panel of judges who score each team.

The awards are designed to recognize the achievements of the teams, as well as the significant role that teams play in the overall success of an organization and contributions to the IT community as a whole.

Nominated teams were judged in award classes based on company size with points awarded in the following categories: cost effectiveness, innovation, change leadership, value creation, service quality and community.

Hardware Store All-Stars: Fla., Ala. and Miss.

HCN congratulates the 50 hardware store, home center and farm and ranch retailers who made the annual HCN Hardware Store All-Star list.

Now in its third year, HCN’s annual list of high performers recognizes hardware stores — one from each state — that are outstanding in their field. The complete list and analysis can be found in the September issue of HCN. Meanwhile, HCN Daily will work its way across the country with mini profiles, continuing this week with Florida, Alabama and Mississippi.

Florida: A helpful staff with a stellar sense of humor is but a feather in the cap for Halls Ace Hardware & Lumber, which has all the trappings of a local favorite in Milton. As if it weren’t enough that they can reliably find everything they need within the store’s deceptively small confines, first-time customers also get a welcome package. This is as much a destination for the project-oriented as it is for the seeker of odds, ends and curiosities.

Alabama: Don’t take our word for it that Montgomery’s Dixie Pro Hardware is the stuff of award winners. It nabbed the 2012 PRO Retailer of the Year title for Birmingham-based distributor Long-Lewis Hardware Co., which recognizes the value of the store’s marketing program and other distinguishing features. 

Mississippi: In some ways, Hernando’s Complete Home Center is the stuff dreams are made of. Its owner was managing a lumberyard for another operation until he got to open up his own store, with the end product being a 12,000-sq.-ft. indoor LBM that’s always got its light on for its customers. And when lights are off, a quirky Facebook account alerts the community when sleds, swimming pools and bistro sets go on sale.

Do it Best hosts leadership training

Do it Best Corp. concluded a week-long, intensive leadership training development program for a selected group of managers and leaders from among its member-owned stores.

The inaugural Leadership Development Institute (LDI) was held Nov. 12-15, at the co-op’s Fort Wayne, Ind., headquarters. Twenty-three attendees took part in the training. 

“LDi has been an outstanding experience,” said Justin Ellis, manager of two Builders Do it Centers in New Mexico. “This program has helped me develop the tools our business needs to close the gap between vision and results.”

Do it Best Corp. said it created the LDI to help managers be responsive to the needs of their employees and their customers and, as a result, more successful overall. 

The first three days of LDI each featured content centered on a specific theme — Self, Team and Business — all of which culminated with each participant developing and presenting to their peers their strategic plans on the Institute’s fourth and final day. Several key Do it Best Corp. leaders shared their leadership insights during LDI, including president and CEO Bob Taylor; executive VP and COO Dan Starr; VP information technology Mike Altendorf; and Jay Brown, VP sales and business development.

“The focus of LDI is to provide these participants with the tools and concepts to understand why people do what they do and how leaders can more effectively manage themselves, their teams and their businesses,” said Brown. “The end goal of this training is to help them understand how to best execute the personalized strategic leadership plans they created here once they return to their stores.”

Several outside leadership development experts participated in the presentations and discussions, including Rick Davis of Building Leaders, Dr. John Lovell of National Assessment Services, Scott Harrison of Rea Magnet Wire, and Indiana University-Purdue University communications instructors Jake Gamble and Amanda Parker.
