Trex develops deck-building software

Winchester, Va.-based Trex has introduced a deck design program for contractors, designers and landscape architects.

The software, called DeckWorks, operates as a plug-in for the popular Vectorworks platform for landscape architects, designers and contractors. The program allows professionals to produce and output photo-realistic 3-D renderings of outdoor living spaces for their customers.

“DeckWorks is an opportunity for Trex to expand its leadership position within the decking industry, while also creating awareness of and preference for Trex products among professionals outside of the category,” said Ron Kaplan, chairman, president and CEO of Trex, the manufacturer of wood-alternative decking and railing products. “Remodelers and landscapers are often involved in creating outdoor living spaces, but may not have access to software in which decking is well represented.”

The software features a variety of common wood products but positions Trex as the exclusive wood-alternative option for decking and railing. In addition, DeckWorks makes it possible to incorporate landscaping, lighting, furniture and accessories in order to visualize an outdoor living space. 

Professionals who already own select Vectorworks software may purchase a Trex DeckWorks plug-in.

Former Home Depot exec to lead Forest Trust

Geneva, Switzerland-based The Forest Trust, a non-profit organization that helps businesses bring responsible products to market, has announced the appointment of Stephen Conwell as North America director of operations. He will be based in Atlanta.

Previously, Conwell spent 12 years with Home Depot where he served as divisional merchandising manager and global merchandising manager. In that role Conwell was responsible for leading the development and execution of Home Depot’s environmental/sustainability wood purchasing policy. Prior to that, Conwell was with Weyerhaeuser, where he managed customer service distribution for the Northeast U.S. market and was eventually named general manager for wood products distribution in the Northeast.

“We’re fortunate to have as our new North America director someone with extensive leadership expertise in merchandising/manufacturing best practices and global supply chain management,” said Scott Poynton, executive director of TFT. “Stephen’s ability to balance both social and economic standards and to work with stakeholders on different sides of an issue will prove crucial to TFT’s mission to help companies transform their timber supply chains and stop forest destruction.”

In his new role, Conwell will be responsible for all North American operations. He will lead their delivery activities, working with existing members to help them meet their legality and sustainability goals. He’ll also lead TFT’s business development activities to extend their services to more companies seeking support to deliver responsible products to their customers.

One of Conwell’s most important roles will be to show U.S. firms how to adhere to the Lacey Act, a century-old piece of federal legislation that was amended recently in order to stop the importation and sale of illegal wood in the United States.

ENAP looks to replace retiring CEO

Russell Kennedy retired as president and CEO of ENAP, the New Windsor, N.Y.-based lumber and building material co-operative.

On an interim basis, CFO Steve Sallah will be acting chief operating officer.

Kennedy led the co-op — the name is an acronym for "Everybody Needs a Profit" — for the past five years. In a prepared statement, he pointed to his appreciation to and confidence in the current ENAP team.

"The past five years have been challenging and exciting," Kennedy wrote. "ENAP has taken action to improve the co-op and has made investments in staff and technology to directly benefit the organization. These investments, including our world-class Enterprise Resource Planning tool, which has completed development and is in testing phase, will provide a more seamless interaction with members and vendors and make internal operations of ENAP run much more effectively."
