Throwback Thursday: Here’s The Home Team
It was perhaps the shortest run for a home center in the history of retailing.
The March 12, 1984 issue of National Home Center News, the forerunner of HBSDealer, covered the creation of The Home Team — a joint venture between 1984 powerhouses Hechinger and Kmart.
NHCN covered the New York press conference, which brought together the four executives shown above: Stephen Bachand, CEO of the new company; Richard England, chairman of Hechinger; Bernard Fauber, Kmart chairman; John Hechinger, president of Hechinger.
The new venture immediately planned three 80,000 square-foot home improvement warehouse stores in suburban Chicago. "The news took the home center industry completely by surprise," wrote NHCN. "In an industry where rumors seem to spread as quickly as warehouse stores, everyone, even top Hechinger employees were kept in the dark."
Alas, in April the deal was scrapped — too many points of contention. The three stores that were to become The Home Team stores opened instead under the Kmart banner.

Lixil names VP of insights and analytics
Michelle Mattrey has been named VP, insights and analytics for LIXIL Americas, home to the American Standard, DXV and Grohe bath and kitchen brands.
In this position, Mattrey will be responsible for gaining insights and analytics from customer, consumer, market and competitive information sources. Mattrey will report directly to LIXIL Americas CEO and President Steven Delarge.
“Michelle brings more than 20 years of experience in market research, consumer insights and analytics, and will be instrumental in driving business growth,” said Delarge. “LIXIL invests in researching what our customers want in kitchen and bath products. I’m confident that under Michelle’s leadership, we will establish a robust platform for turning data-driven insights into actionable strategies for developing innovative products that don’t just enhance living, but change how we live.”
Most recently, Mattrey served as director, consumer and market insights, Africa Eurasia Division for Colgate-Palmolive. Prior to the Africa Eurasia Division, Michelle helped build the market insights and analytics function for Colgate’s Latin America region. Prior to joining Colgate-Palmolive, Mattrey spent 11 years at Mars, Inc., where she held positions in consumer insights and analytics, as well as strategic planning.
Hy-Lite embraces Arts and Crafts
As the Arts and Crafts style continues to gain interest in homes across America, Hy-Lite now offers a Mission style window in a 2' x 2' size. The window is part of the company's Home Designer Collection series. Hy-Lite is a manufacturer of acrylic block, glass block and decorative glass windows.
"We successfully launched the Baroque and Prairie styles in the 2' x 2' size earlier this year," says Roger Murphy, president of Hy-Lite, a U.S. Block Windows Company. "Once people saw the appeal of those styles in a smaller size we immediately began getting requests for the Mission style window in the same size."
The 2' x 2' windows are proving especially popular when grouped in "threes" to create wall art for a room, the company says. The fixed units can be stacked vertically, run horizontally, or installed in different creative fashions to create eye-catching window creations in larger spaces. The windows can also be used singularly to bring light and design style to smaller spaces in the home, like guest bathrooms, laundry rooms or home office spaces.
A Craftsman-inspired design, the Mission window is constructed with silkscreened tempered privacy glass and clear diamond shapes on the interior. Each window is constructed with a multi-chambered heavy-duty vinyl frame in either white, tan, driftwood or bronze. The windows come with a nail fin or nail fin and J-Channel.
