Supporting the troops, WD-40 releases military collectible cans

BY HBSDEALER Staff

San Diego-based WD-40 Co. released a limited edition WD-40 Military Collectible Series.

The four cans are painted with artwork that honors all branches of the U.S. military.

For every Collectible Series can purchased through Memorial Day, May 30, WD-40 Co. will donate 10 cents to three military charities, a minimum of $100,000 per charity. While the limited edition cans hit store shelves in mid-March, a satellite media tour on April 12 from the deck of the U.S.S. Midway in San Diego will officially kick off the promotion. It will feature “The Gunny” R. Lee Ermey commanding charity group volunteers through an obstacle course and encouraging viewers and listeners to go purchase the series of cans while supplies last.

“We are proud of those who serve or have served in uniform and have several members of our team who are veterans,” said Tim Lesmeister, VP marketing at WD-40 Co. “By partnering with organizations we know will make a positive difference in the lives of these men and women, we hope to honor their commitment and do our part to help support them and their loved ones.”

The company set up a microsite to support the promotion.

BY HBSDEALER Staff

Ashland City, Tenn.-based A. O. Smith Water Products Co. donated a 120-gallon solar storage tank to the Hurston family of Cocoa Beach, Fla., project of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

“Having recently contributed to the local efforts of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition for The Nashville Build, A. O. Smith was pleased to be a part of the Cocoa Beach project and to make a difference for the Hurston family and their new home,” says David Chisolm, brand manager for A. O. Smith Water Products. “As a company that values philanthropic involvement and charitable giving, we enjoy giving back to the communities we serve.”

The Hurston family’s previous home and belongings were destroyed two years ago due to a burst water pipe while they were away on a charitable relief effort. The company’s new home is a 3,400-square-foot, eco-friendly home.

Some of the home’s various green innovations include solar hot water, solar electric, energy-saving insulation, LED lights, and a high-efficiency heating and air conditioning unit, among others.

Cap-Tor screws designed for capstock decking

BY HBSDEALER Staff

Edison, NJ.-based Starborn Industries Inc., a manufacturer of fasteners and related products for the building industry, introduced Cap-Tor, a new high-performance fastener specifically designed for use with the newest type of capstock (co-extruded) decking.

The product also works with more traditional composite decking materials, the company said.

The specially engineered head and thread design of Cap-Tor screws mitigate the common challenges associated with fastening capstock decking. These problems include curled waste (shards of attached decking that form around the screw head), dimpling (the “caving in” of the deck board around the screw head), and white shear (a white discoloration around the screw head caused by the fastener stretching the hard outer shell of the decking).

“New types of PVC and composite decking are introduced regularly,” said Larry Crossley, VP sales at Starborn Industries, in a prepared statement. “Starborn prides itself on its ability to keep up with the rapidly changing decking market. Cap-Tor is a perfect example of that.”

Cap-Tor was engineered by Starborn Industries with a head that cleanly penetrates the hard outer layer of capstock products to ensure a clean tight fit. It is available in stainless and epoxy-coated steel and in 10 different colors.
