Stocks retreat on Tuesday

All indications point to another up-and-down week on Wall Street, as the HCN Stock Index fell to 731.72 on Tuesday. After a 2 percent jump on Monday, the basket of 20 home channel stocks gave back its gains, and more, falling 2.9 percent yesterday.

Only two of the 20 companies showed increases in share value — Tractor Supply, up 28 cents to $35.53; and Andersons, up 22 cents to $3.28.

Also on Tuesday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 2.23 percent to 8,827.29. The HCN Index is now down 26.8 percent since Sept. 15.

Connecticut hardware store to close

Bunnell Paint & Hardware in New Haven, Conn., is going out of business after 33 years, according to the New Haven Independent.

Owner Len Mullally has owned the store since 1975, when he converted it from a paint and wallpaper store to a hardware store. He is expected to close his doors by the end of October. The 74-year-old Mullally said he will retire.

ABC Supply names new regional fleet specialist

LBM distributor ABC Supply has promoted Bert W. Maldonado to regional fleet specialist for the company’s Southeast region. Maldonado is now responsible for all of the 67-branch region’s vehicles and vehicle-related equipment. He also manages the company’s Customer Service Delivery System program in the region. He is based in ABC Supply’s regional office in Raleigh, N.C.

Maldonado most recently served as delivery service manager at ABC Supply’s Pensacola, Fla. store. He joined ABC Supply in 2005 as a delivery driver for the Pensacola branch.
