Salvatore Abbate named chief sales and marketing officer at Andersen

Andersen Corporation has named Salvatore Abbate chief sales and marketing officer.

Abbate will replace Craig Evanich in this role, in which he will oversee the development of sales and marketing strategies, as well as maintain responsibility for the company’s Logistics and Order Management operations. Evanich retired in June.

“This aligns responsibility for all customer interactions and customer-facing components into one organization, which is important to building an exceptional customer experiences,” Andersen Division president Jerry Redmond said. “Under Sal’s leadership our sales and marketing teams are firing on all cylinders as the housing market recovers.”

Abbate has more than 20 years of experience in building and consumer products manufacturing, beginning with 16 years at Armstrong and most recently with Solutia, Inc., where he was VP global sales and marketing of the Performance Films division. His background in new product development, advertising, regional sales and promotions will serve to inform his new role.

Shaw Industries plans expansion Tenn. facility

Shaw Industries Group, Inc. of Berkshire Hathaway has announced plans to expand its hardwood floor manufacturing facility in South Pittsburg, Tenn.

Shaw plans to invest at least $40 million and hire over 25 new associates in response to growing demand for its Epic engineered flooring product, adding more than 60% capacity to its existing facility. Construction will begin later this year.

“The expansion of the South Pittsburg hardwood operation is an important component in our overall hardwood strategy," said Shaw chairman and CEO Vance Bell. "By investing in this plant and our other hardwood facilities, we are enhancing our ability to offer the widest product mix, the most innovative design, and the greatest quality and service to our customers."

The plant currently employs 200 people, 65 of which were added this year after Shaw increased the number of shifts at the facility.

The company also recently announced plans for a new carpet tile plant in Georgia, opened a carpet tile plant in China and implemented $26 million worth of technology and automation at its hardwood facilities in Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina.

Michigan dealer moves into Indiana

Zeeland Lumber and Supply has announced plans for a full-service yard and manufacturing facility in Elkhart, Ind.

Zeeland, Mich.-based Zeeland Lumber Holdings, the parent company of Zeeland Lumber and Supply, is expanding into Northern Indiana with a distribution center, lumberyard and manufacturing facility.

The new Elkhart, Ind., facility, located at 3740 Manchester Dr., will open during the first quarter of 2014. Zeeland Lumber and Supply has had a presence in Northern Indiana since 2009 when it opened a sales office at 55900 Hoosier Ave. in Mishawaka. 

The company describes the new location as a full service lumberyard and distribution facility . It will specialize in roof trusses, wall panels and floor joists.

“Everyone here at Zeeland Lumber and Supply is excited to be expanding into the Elkhart area,” said Mike Dykstra, president and CEO of Zeeland Lumber and Supply. “We believe that this move will allow us to better serve our existing Indiana clients from their own ‘backyards.’ The added addition of a manufacturing facility will also help us expand our client base in and around Elkhart County.”

Zeeland Lumber was recognized in 2006 as HCN Independent Pro Dealer of the Year.
