Regulations deter rebuilding for Nebraska dealer

BY HBSDEALER Staff

Louisville Ace Hardware, a Nebraska dealer that closed after a fire destroyed the store, has decided not to reopen due to the costs imposed by various government regulations.

In a letter published by The Plattsmouth Journal, owners Larry and Maureen Gulizia cited increased flood plain levels that require a severely elevated building; the American Disabilities Act’s stringent guidelines; and the state of Nebraska’s new Energy Initiative as factors that will add additional costs to construction.

Larry Gulizia has begun working for the city of Louisville and Maureen Gulizia has taken a position with Westlake Ace Hardware as a paint department specialist, the letter said.

Too bad for the owner. But so
Too bad for the owner. But so sad to think that the government is imposing a lot of payment to potential owners and that is the reason why they don't reopen or open their business. - Mendel Mintz

New Mexico dealer rebrands and expands

BY Brae Canlen

A Do it Best member with two stores in New Mexico has launched a wholesale division, remodeled its stores, and rebranded them under a single name: Builders Do it Center. Justin Ellis, corporate sales manager for Roswell Lumber Do it Center and Artesia Do it Center, told Home Channel News that the impetus for the change was future growth for the company, which would like to expand its geographical footprint.

“We’re looking to grow, and one of the things that’s stopped us from making a couple of acquisitions in the past was the branding issue,” he explained. But on April 2, both home centers reopened as Builders Do it Center, with kitchen, bath, flooring and millwork showrooms. The stores, which cater to builders, specialty contractors, remodelers, roofers, commercial and industrial customers, and project-oriented DIYers, have recently been remodeled and remerchandised.

“We’ve also re-entered the lighting business after [an absence of] seven or eight years,” said Ellis, whose father, Bruce Ellis, founded the company and will continue to serve as president and CEO.

The company’s latest venture, RLC Supply & Logistics, is a wholesale operation that “came from the need for us to manage some of our own inventory, as well as some vendors looking for a distributor partner,” Ellis explained. Still in its infancy, the division hopes to extend its reach into West Texas and Southern Colorado. The wholesale unit and the stores will operate under parent company Roswell Lumber Co., which also includes the Overhead Door of Southeast New Mexico. Two new web sites, buildersdoitcenter.com and buildersknowledge.com, have been launched as part of the initiative.

Aubuchon Hardware earns Golden Hammer

BY Ken Clark

Westminster, Mass.-based Aubuchon Hardware, an independent chain of 126 hardware stores in the northeastern United States, will accept the Home Channel News Retailer of the Year award during the National Hardware Show in Las Vegas.

The award is part of the 28th Annual Golden Hammer Awards, which will take place May 2 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

As an independent hardware chain that operates its own distribution center, Aubuchon is a rarity in the home improvement industry.

“Aubuchon is one of the most interesting retailers in all of America,” said Ken Clark, editor of Home Channel News. “They’ve maintained their independent roots for more than 100 years while expanding well beyond 100 stores.”

According to CEO M. Marcus Moran Jr., the award “is such a positive endorsement of all our hard-working employees, loyal vendors and dedicated family members. Though we have plenty more goals to achieve in our strategic plan, so much has already been accomplished.

“Our founding fathers would be very proud. We are looking forward to the National Hardware Show and bringing back the Golden Hammer to our faithful employees," he said.

The company’s founders began their journey in 1908 when William E. Aubuchon Sr. established a hardware store in Fitchburg, Mass. Today, the company’s footprint expands beyond Massachusetts to Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Connecticut and New York.

The century-old company has also shown digital savvy. Aubuchon’s hardwarestore.com division was an early pioneer in retail e-commerce.

Doors will open at 7:30 a.m. for the Golden Hammer Awards ceremony, which will also include the Home Channel Hall of Fame induction of Bob Taylor, Do it Best Corp. CEO.
