Obituary: Forest products leader Chris Snavely
Christian Miller Snavely, Jr., the chairman emeritus of Snavely Forest Products , World War II veteran and past chairman of the North American Wholesale Lumber Association died Oct. 24. He was 88.
Snavely is remembered by friends and colleagues as a generous and well-respected business leader. He was elected chairman of the industry trade association, NAWLA, which honored him with the prestigious Mulrooney Award for outstanding contributions to the forest products industry.
Chris was born in Lititz, Pa., and enlisted in the US Army in 1942 and entered the European Theater where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Chris was captured there and remained a POW until his liberation in 1945. He was honorably discharged in 1945, and recalled into service during the Korean War, where he served, 1950 to 1951.
Among Chris Snavely’s many philanthropic endeavors were his active support of The Pittsburgh Symphony and The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. He was the founder of the Haiti Tree Reintroduction Program (HTRIP), whose objective is the reforestation of Haiti.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Theresa Vant Snavely. He is also survived by his children Susan Fitzsimmons (David) and Steve Snavely (Peggy); five grandchildren, Corinne Trively (Ed), Matthew Anderson, Patrick Snavely, Laura Snavely, and Eric Snavely. Chris was the proud great-grandfather of Samuel Trively, Sophia Trively and Quinn Trively.
Chris was preceded in death by his son Christian Miller Snavely III.
Fiberon announces distribution agreement with LYS
Fiberon, a manufacturer of PVC and composite decking, railing and fencing products, has announced a distribution partnership with Lumber Yard Supply Company, LYS, based in Great Falls, Mont. LYS has distribution centers in Great Falls and Billings, Mont., and Spokane Valley, Wash.
LYS will carry the full line of Fiberon decking, railing and fastener products to serve lumberyards and home centers throughout their markets.
"The addition of LYS to our distribution network will strengthen our presence in these markets," said Bill Ross, VP sales for Fiberon. "LYS is committed to offering high quality products for the lumber and building material industry."
Fiberon composite decking and railing products are sold to professional contractors through a national and international network of distributors and retail outlets.
PulteGroup posts Q3 net income of $117 million
Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-based PulteGroup reported third-quarter net income of $117 million, compared with a net loss of $129 million in the year-ago period.
Revenue from home sales in the third quarter ended Sept. 30 increased 12% from the prior year to $1.2 billion. Higher revenue for the period was driven by a 6% increase in average selling price to $279,000, combined with a 5% increase in closings to 4,418 homes.
Net new orders for the third quarter totaled 4,544 homes valued at $1.3 billion, an increase of 27% and 43%, respectively, over the prior year.
"We are extremely pleased with the progress PulteGroup continues to make as our third quarter results represent our highest quarterly earnings since the third quarter of 2006 and keep us on track for full-year profitability," said Richard Dugas Jr., chairman, president and CEO of PulteGroup. "Our financial performance reflects improvements within our homebuilding operations which resulted in adjusted gross margins of 21.6%, an increase of 320 basis points over last year, and improved SG&A leverage as overhead expenses fell 80 basis points to 10.2% of home sale revenues.
