In North Carolina, Spencer’s Hardware earns award

Spencer’s Hardware Farm & Garden Center earned the Small Business of the Year Award from the Marion (N.C.) Business Association. 

According to an article in The McDowell News, owner Nancy Spencer, 60, said she was surprised to receive the award. 

A statement from the Marion Business Association reads: "Having been an active member of the community since 1983, Spencer’s Hardware has become a local fixture. Nancy has been fully involved with running the store since the beginning. All three children were raised in the store from the time they were babies."

The store has been serving customers for 28 years and has been a member of Do it Best Corp. since 1991.

ACO Hardware signs on with Vertis

Michigan-based home improvement chain ACO Hardware has expanded its relationship with Vertis and named the company its exclusive provider of newspaper inserts, Inserts2online and logistics.

“Our partnership with Vertis started in 2009, and we have benefited greatly from their consistently high-quality advertising inserts that attract our customers’ attention,” said Jim Zub, director of marketing and advertising for ACO Hardware. “As we continue to look for new ways to serve and connect with our valued customers, Vertis has stepped up and transformed the information in our weekly ads to also exist on our website so that shoppers can see our specials and offers with complete convenience.” 

Vertis will showcase the retailer’s complete collection of home improvement products through a highly targeted advertising program, which will include the production of single sheets, gatefolds and eight-page tabs.

Vertis’ Inserts2online solution transforms print inserts into interactive online content, enabling the retailer to engage more customers with tools for researching and evaluating products and specials, making purchasing decisions, sharing offers with friends and printing coupons directly from the company’s website.

Other Vertis customers in the home improvement space include Lowe’s, Ace Hardware stores and Menards, according to the Baltimore-based company.

State-by-state Hardware Store All-stars: Okla., Ore. and Pa.

• Oklahoma
Sutherlands
Pick a state in the south central United States, anywhere between California and Alabama, and Sutherlands is there. The company has a regional office in Jenks, Okla., and five stores throughout the state. The 94-year-old, family owned firm operates 56 locations in 13 states, and they range from small lumberyards to 140,000-sq.-ft. warehouse stores. Its 2010 split between DIY and contractor business is 70% to 30%, according to Chain Store Guide, a directory of home center operators and hardware stores. Sutherlands latest plans are to put a store in a former 90,000-sq.-ft. Walmart outside its headquarter city of Kansas City, Mo.

Jerry’s Home Improvement Center
In Eugene, Ore., Jerry’s is the kind of store that attracts tour groups — of other retailers. Not your father’s hardware store, Jerry’s won’t fit on most Main Streets — its original store in Eugene measures 360,000 sq. ft., including a drive-through lumberyard. But what Jerry’s is also famous for, among independents, is building its second, 135,000-sq.-ft. location in Springfield, Ore., at the same time Home Depot was pulling permits for one of its own big boxes, less than a mile away. The Home Depot never opened.

Roaring Spring True Value
Connecting with customers has helped make Roaring Spring a big-time success. Case in point: When it announced the hiring of sales associate Sally Rhodes on Facebook, exactly one minute later, a customer/fan responded: “I love Sally Rhodes!! She’s the best.” It is that kind of love that makes this “department store” something special. Doug Mapes, another customer, wrote: “What can I say that hasn’t already been said. There is no store that I know of that offers a more friendly atmosphere than here. I wish you could can that charm.”
