A new Lavender hits the market
Peace Tree Farm and Cultivaris introduced Lavender ‘Phenomenal,’ a new intermedia type lavender to the horticulture market.
The companies describe the plant as hardy to Zone 5, with a winter survival and overall performance that surpasses all other hardy lavenders.
“Phenomenal lives up to its name with its dense, bushy habit and spectacular performance,” said Lloyd Traven of Peace Tree Farm. Lloyd, with his wife Candy, discovered ‘Phenomenal’ while propagating thousands of lavenders for Carousel Farm Lavender from an intermedia selection made by Niko Christou. The uniform growth habit makes ‘Phenomenal’ well suited for bench-run production that requires little maintenance after transplanting, according to the company.
At WOLF, Danielson named CEO
Craig Danielson has been named CEO of WOLF, the York, Pa.-based supplier and distributor of building products.
Danielson assumes the role from Tom Wolf, a sixth-generation member of the founding Wolf family who announced his retirement in June in order to run for governor of Pennsylvania.
WOLF has been in continuous operation since 1843, and is currently the largest supplier of kitchen and bath cabinets in the United States and a leading provider of building products in 25 Eastern states, the company said.
Danielson most recently served as president of both The Wolf Organization, which focuses on distribution to independent dealers, and WOLF Home Products, which develops WOLF-branded products.
Danielson was a key member of the leadership team that orchestrated a major strategic shift at WOLF that began in 2010. The company, once a traditional two-step distributor, has transformed itself into a sourcing company that focuses on identifying or developing products designed solely to meet the needs of independent dealers. As part of that transformation, Danielson led WOLF’s efforts to pioneer multiple new products, most notably WOLF’s private-label cabinets, decking, railing and trim.
Since joining WOLF in 1993, Danielson has held various positions, including sales representative, regional sales manager, VP and senior VP. He is an active CYO baseball and youth soccer and basketball coach, and enjoys golf, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.
Survey: Most Americans unfamiliar with incandescent bulb ban
A survey recently conducted for Lutron Electronics found that very few Americans are aware of the 40- and 60-watt incandescent bulb ban that just went into effect, let alone their lighting options going into 2014.
According to the survey, which polled 1,000 U.S. adults in November, fewer than one in three are aware that manufacturers are no longer allowed to produce the bulbs.
Additionally, one in 10 adults is familiar with lighting alternatives such as LEDs and CFLs.
“Manufacturers, retailers and others in the lighting industry—including the trade and general press—have been working to get the word out for the past two years,” said Terry McGowan, director of engineering for the American Lighting Association. “But since the 40- and 60-watt incandescent bulbs represent more than 60% of all U.S. household bulbs sold annually, some people will definitely be in for a shock.”
Some survey information could be potentially valuable for manufacturers; three-quarters of respondants said that it’s important for the new energy-efficient bulbs to be dimmable.
The survey was conducted by The Futures Company, an independent research organization, in time for a panel gathering of experts in New York City that took place just before the law went into effect.
