New DL Ripper drywall cutting tool speeds up projects

North Loup, Neb.-based DL Ripper has introduced what they describe as a revolutionary new product that’ll change drywall projects for good.

The DL Ripper drywall cutting tool streamlines the rip cutting process, making cuts faster, straighter, smoother and more precise. According to the company, the tool reduces cutting time by up to 40%.

An easy-adjust precision guide-bar allows contractors and DIYers to step and repeat several scores before breaking the drywall for multiple precise cuts.

Other features include twin-blade technology to cut both sides at once, a quick-release toggle clamp, ergonomic handle and a capacity to handle rip cuts from 2" to 24".

Scotts Miracle-Gro funds Florida water research

The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company has committed to a multi-year program in which it will fund environmental groups and academic institutions invested in researching solutions to Florida’s water quality issues. Additionally, it will launch a multimedia consumer education campaign aimed at teaching homeowners to balance lawncare needs with water conservation.

"As the leader in consumer lawn and garden care, we have a responsibility to help our consumers use our products correctly in order to be good stewards of the environment," said chairman and CEO Jim Hagedorn. "As a resident of the Treasure Coast, and as someone with a passion to be on the water, I have witnessed the challenges in the St. Lucie River, the Indian River Lagoon and other waterways. I want Floridians to be confident that we’re helping them do their part to help protect our most valuable natural resources."

For one, Scotts Miracle-Gro will provide a two-year research grant to the Ocean Resource Conservation Association in Ft. Pierce, Fla. 

Additionally, the company will partner with environmental restoration groups on water restoration projects, the first of which will provide 80,000 salt marsh plants via a partnership with Tampa Bay Watch.

The company will also work to create community gardens and green spaces in every Florida county over the next three years, in collaboration with the U.S. Conference of Mayors and Plant-A-Row For the Hungry.

The initiative, which totals a commitment of $5 million over 3 years, falls in line with a broader effort on the company’s part to improve the environmental viability of its lawn care products, removing phosphorus to reduce the amount of total nitrogen as well as enhancing its lawn spreaders for on-target fertilizer application.

Scotts Miracle-Gro Q1 results somewhat flat

The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company released its fiscal first-quarter results, which were in line with the company’s expectations but showed little year-over-year movement.

Net sales for the three months ended Dec. 28, 2013, were $196.4 million, down 5% compared with the same quarter last year. The company attributed the decline to the timing of pre-season shipments to retailers.

Net income marked a 2% improvement, though the company has been operating at a loss. Income for the quarter was a loss of $103.4 million, a slight improvement over last year’s loss of $105.1 million.

"While most of North America is gripped by winter, our sales, marketing and supply chain teams are working diligently to ensure a strong start to the lawn and garden season," said Jim Hagedorn, chairman and CEO. "In markets where gardening activity is occurring, we see solid levels of consumer participation, which gives us continued confidence in our plans for the year."

Scotts Miracle-Gro reaffirmed its fiscal 2014 outlook of a 2 to 3% increase in company-wide net sales. This projection is predicated on flat unit volume, modest price increases in the Global Consumer segment and growth in the Scotts LawnService business.
