NARI offers updates for Post-Sandy rebuilding efforts

Des Plaines, Ill.-based National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) released a post-Hurricane Sandy report from its 12 chapters affected by the northeastern storm.

“Those affected by the storm are now trying to piece lives back together,” says NARI National Chairman Michael Hydeck, president of Hydeck Design Build, in Telford, Pa. “The NARI community is proud to come together and support each other in what will be a long and difficult rebuilding process.”

Here is a look at some of NARI’s Sandy recovery efforts so far.

• New York City/Long Island NARI chapter took action after seeing a news report about the Heckman family’s struggle to treat one child’s recent leukemia diagnosis with a home destroyed by the storm. The chapter immediately organized a rebuild of the home, gathering supplies and labor, for what will eventually be a new home for the family.

• NARI-Staten Island Home Improvement Contractors Association is focused on education and safety for homeowners during the rebuild. They have joined forces with other groups and business leaders to form the Rebuild SI coalition, with the goal of disseminating information to more than 20,000 victims on issues like avoiding unscrupulous/unlicensed contractors, health risks associated with flood waters and hazardous materials left behind, and proper care and removal during cleanup to lessen risk.

In addition, Steven Coppola, NARI-HIC of Staten Island Liaison and president of APB Security Systems Inc., in Staten Island, N.Y., said that many members are giving back in additional ways. “Remodelers are giving free estimates to help victims apply for assistance, and some are performing work without any assurance of payment,” Coppola said.

• NARI of Bucks-Mont chapter based in Spring House, Pa., raised funds and organized multiple supply drop-off trips to New York City. On one trip to Queens, chapter board members joined Bill Clinton and volunteers from the Clinton Global Initiative in rebuild efforts.

Chapter Membership Chair Laura Hawley, principal of Ambiance Design based in Pipersville, Pa., continues to look for help and donations and plans to return to the same neighborhood. “There is just so much to do and still great need,” Hawley said.

• NARI Eastern Massachusetts chapter based in Newton Centre, Mass., organized a supply drop-off at Breezy Point, home to many New York City police and firefighters who are themselves in need of assistance from flooding and fires. Everything from light construction equipment, clothing, food and water were collected in the effort.

• Building Industries Exchange of Pottstown and Vicinity member Steven Oehlert, of Oehlert Brothers Inc., a heating and cooling company in Royersford, Pa., made 20 emergency fuel deliveries to New Jersey residents and municipalities in need of gasoline and diesel to power generators and more directly following the storm. Additionally, Potty Queen, a portable restroom rental company based in Pottstown, Pa., donated portable restrooms and comfort stations in to areas in New York and New Jersey.

• Remodeling Contractors Association of Connecticut chapter member Carl Loschiavo, president of Timberline Carpentry in Stratford, Conn., and property owner in the Milford Shore area, lost two homes in the storm. Nevertheless, Loschiavo and his crew started pumping water from basements during the first three days following the storm and set up a grill and passed out hot dogs and hamburgers to workers and victims. “It was great to bring neighbors and workers together to talk and laugh over hot food, if even only a minute — it gave people a little break from the smell and disaster around them,” Loschiavo said.

• North Jersey NARI chapter members, based in Hawthorne, N.J., are doing their part to help as well, providing free delivery of materials and donating a portion of jobs sold from November to the end of January to the American Red Cross Sandy Relief fund.

Software company hires home-builder purchasing exec

Hyphen Solutions has appointed Ken Pinto, a former supply chain executive for Toll Bros. and other national home builders, as its VP supply chain. Pinto brings 21 years of supply chain management expertise to Hyphen’s real estate and software management team. He most recently served as the director of supply chain at Toll Bros. and has held similar positions at Standard Pacific and Pulte Homes. Pinto also heads the Supply Chain Benchmark Group, which is a coalition of the purchasing leaders of some of the largest home builders in the United States.

"[Pinto] brings a vast amount of home-builder knowledge related to integrated supply chain processes to our company. In his new role, he will be able to focus on driving industry-leading change that benefits both builders and their supply chain partners," said David Deniger, chairman of the board at Hyphen.

Hyphen’s president Felix Vasquez said: "[Pinto] will initially focus his efforts on our eBuilderHub.com division, where we expect to provide increased product visibility to manufacturers and distributors, while delivering cost-reducing software and process efficiencies to local and regional home builders."

Based in Dallas, Hyphen Solutions provides 17,000 users with supply chain management, collaborationand scheduling solutions for North America’s home builders and their suppliers. According to the company’s announcement, 10 of the top 15 home builders and 99 of the top LBM suppliers already utilize Hyphen’s software.

M-D Building Products makes acquisition

Oklahoma City-based M-D Building Products acquired Loxcreen Co., a privately held precision manufacturing company founded in 1946 on patents for fabricating window screens. 

The acquisition includes Loxcreen’s Canadian flooring group operated under the Bengard Manufacturing name in Mississauga, Ontario. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The combined sales of both companies will exceed $200 million annually. 

The two privately held companies, with approximately 800 employees at nine manufacturing and distribution facilities in the United States and Canada, specialize in customized aluminum and plastic extrusion manufacturing in connection with producing and marketing a variety of window, flooring, door and tool products, and accessories used in commercial and residential construction and renovation.

“The Loxcreen acquisition and its related manufacturing, engineering and products presents a unique opportunity for us to bring two complementary and compatible businesses with strong market presence together to drive long-term growth,” said Loren Plotkin, chairman and president of M-D Building Products.   “For many years, we have admired Loxcreen as a quality competitor with a strong line of well-engineered and manufactured building products. We know them well and realized early in the due diligence process that the combined companies would be synergistically stronger with greater opportunities given our ability to increase our vertical manufacturing capabilities and expand product lines to meet our customer’s evolving needs.”

Loxcreen’s CEO Wayne Parrish, said: “While our emotions are mixed with selling the business after a successful 65 years of operation, we recognize the acquisition by M-D Building Products offers expanded opportunities long-term for our employees and customers.”

In addition to operations in Canada, Loxcreen also operates manufacturing and distribution facilities in Georgia, Oregon, Texas, Ohio, Missouri and South Carolina. Loxcreen is based in Columbia, S.C.

Joe Comitale, president of Loxcreen Canada and COO of the Loxcreen Co., will continue in his role as president of Loxcreen Canada and will join M-D Building Products as executive VP.

M-D Building Products operates manufacturing and distribution facilities in Oklahoma and Georgia.
