Makita adds die grinder to its LXT cordless line

The latest addition to Makita’s LXT Series of lithium-ion-powered tools is the new cordless die grinder.

“With 25,000 RPM and 18 volts of lithium-ion power, it is another trade solution for pros working in plumbing, automotive, service and maintenance," said Ethan Haughawout, Makita product manager, cordless tools.

The new LXDG01 is powered by a Makita-built motor that delivers 25,000 RPM for faster grinding. The compact design with barrel grip weighs only 4.4 lbs., and the stepped neck makes it ideal for working in tight spaces. The slide switch has a lock-on for operator convenience, with vent slots designed to direct exhaust air away from the user. The LXDG01 also features a solid aluminum housing for added durability.

Since its introduction on Oct. 3, 2005, Makita’s LXT Series featuring 18V lithium-ion battery technology has been providing the professional end-user with more work solutions. Nearly six years later, there are more than 40 trade solutions in the LXT Series.

Counterfeiter sentenced for ripping off Lowe’s, other retailers

A Missouri man has been sentenced to nearly two years in prison for using counterfeit money to buy a power drill at Lowe’s and then returning it for cash, according to an article in The Spokesman Review.

Anthony Lamar Thomas, 40, received a 21-month sentence in federal court on June 6 after making a plea deal with prosecutors for his role in the scheme, which involved an accomplice purchasing the drill with counterfeit bills last year, and Thomas returning the product shortly afterwards to a Lowe’s store in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Thomas was also ordered to pay restitution to 18 other merchants in neighboring communities that also received the fake bills. His female accomplice was sentenced in April.

Father’s Day survey offers encouragement

The National Retail Federation describes a kind of pent-up demand for Father’s Day spending as one reason for positive signals from its Consumer Intentions and Actions Father’s Day survey.

As June 19 approaches, research suggests Americans will spend an average of $106.49 on fathers across the country — the highest figure in the survey’s eight-year history, and up significantly from $94.32 last year. 

“Spending on Dad has taken a backseat for the past few years, but some kids and wives are planning to make up for lost time this Father’s Day,” said NRF president and CEO Matthew Shay. “Shoppers seem to be more excited when it comes to gift-giving, an encouraging sign for retailers — and dads –everywhere.”

Total Father’s Day spending is expected to reach about $11.1 billion. Home improvement tools and appliances are expected to account for about $1.4 billion of the total. 

The NRF 2011 Father’s Day Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey was designed to gauge consumer behavior and shopping trends related to the Father’s Day holiday. The survey was conducted for NRF by BIGresearch. The poll of 8,344 consumers was conducted from May 3 to 10, 2011. The consumer poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.0%.
