Lowe’s brings new Iris to International CES
Lowe’s will be unveiling the latest installments in its Iris Smart Home Solutions series at the 2014 International Consumer Electronics Show, taking place Jan. 7-10 in Las Vegas.
New Iris products and services will include a water shut-off valve that cuts supply when a leak is detected, a voice control feature,smart sprinkler systems, smart meter add-ons, universal garage door openers, additional energy saving devices and more.
"Our goal when creating Iris was to make home automation systems simple, affordable and able to grow with customers’ evolving needs," said Kevin Meagher, Lowe’s VP and general manager, Smart Home. "Lowe’s relationship with our vendors allows us to develop and deliver the broadest range of connected home solutions to make homes safer, more efficient and easier to manage."
Lowe’s will be offering product demonstrations at its booth in the Las Vegas Convention Center, South Hall, Meeting Room S115.
It will also host a panel on the future of smart home on Jan. 7, featuring Kevin Meagher and executives from LG, Samsung and Verizon. Bruce Upbin, managing editor of Forbes, will moderate the panel.
Manufacturing Institute honors Patricia
Latrobe, Pa.-based Kennametal Quality Assurance Manager Helen Patricia received honors in the 2nd Women in Manufacturing STEP (Science, Technology, Engineering and Production) Awards presented by The Manufacturing Institute.
Patricia was selected with 160 other woman recognized at all levels, from the factory floor to the C-suite, for demonstrating leadership excellence in modern manufacturing.
"These 160 women are the faces of exciting careers in manufacturing," said Jennifer McNelly, president, The Manufacturing Institute. "We chose to honor these women because they each made significant achievements in manufacturing through positive impact on their company and the industry as a whole. The STEP Awards are part of the larger STEP Ahead initiative launched to examine and promote the role of women in the manufacturing industry through recognition, research, and best practices for attracting, advancing, and retaining strong female talent."
A recent survey from Deloitte and The Manufacturing Institute found that nearly 70% of American manufacturing companies have a moderate to severe shortage of available, qualified workers.
"Throughout my career manufacturing has provided constant opportunities to challenge myself," said Patricia. "There are so many facets to the manufacturing supply chain with endless opportunities to learn and contribute. Every day that I spend in a manufacturing environment, I learn something new and find a way to make a difference."
On Feb. 6, The Manufacturing Institute will recognize 160 recipients of the STEP Awards at a reception in Washington, D.C. The STEP Awards program will highlight each honoree’s story, including their leadership and accomplishments in manufacturing.
Kennametal provides innovative wear-resistant products, application engineering and services to a variety of industries.
NLBMDA welcomes NLRB’s decision to abandon Poster Rule
The National Lumber and Buiding Materials Dealers Association (NLBMDA) released a statement this morning welcoming the National Labor Relations Board’s (NLRB) decision to abandon the Poster Rule.
"The NLRB clearly overstepped its authority with the Poster Rule," said Michael O’Brien, president & CEO of NLBMDA. "NLBMDA is pleased that the NLRB will not continue its misguided pursuit of the rule and this is good news for lumber and building material dealers."
The Poster Rule would have required nearly 6 million employers to post an 11-by-17 inch notice in the workplace notfiying employees of their rights to unionize.
The D.C. Circuit Court had issued an emergency injunction, by way of a request by the NLBMDA-inclusive Coalition for a Democratic Workplace, against the rule two weeks before it was scheduled to take effect in April 2012.
The Court then considered an appeal of a lower court decision upholding the rule, and in May of last year, overturned the regulation on the grounds that it violated the free speech rights of employers under the National Labor Relations Act. In September, the NLRB made a decision not to rehear the case.
