LG introduces allergy-friendly washer

BY HBSDEALER Staff

LG Electronics USA has launched what it claims is the industry’s first top-load washer with steam technology certified "asthma and allergy friendly" by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA).

In addition, the new high-efficiency top-load washer is designed to deliver superior high-efficiency performance, offering uniquely gentle but deep cleaning capabilities, with the added benefit of odor reduction, the company said.

During the exclusive LG "Allergiene" cycle, steam gently but powerfully penetrates fabrics for a deeper clean and allows for the reduction of allergens and wrinkles, the company said.

"LG is proud to be the first in the industry to bring these new technologies to top-load washers," said David VanderWaal, director of home appliance brand marketing, LG Electronics USA. "LG pioneered the use of steam in home laundry, and this new top-loader exemplifies our commitment to enhancing consumers’ lives through the powerful combination of smart and steam technologies."

The new LG top-load washer and its companion gas or electric dryers are available now through selected U.S. regional dealers and expected to become available nationally during the second quarter.

ChoiceDek rolls out new composite deck rail system

BY HBSDealer Staff

ChoiceDek Foundations has announced that 959 Lowe’s stores will begin carrying the company’s speed rail system — a composite material interpretation of classic wood deck speed railing — this month.

"Carpenters for years have used classic 2×4 wood railing systems,” said Brent Gwatney, SVP sales and marketing for ChoiceDek decking products. “Now ChoiceDek is offering homeowners and building pros the same simplicity in a more durable composite railing system."

ChoiceDek is prepackaging kits to make it easier for buyers to determine exact quantities needed. The prepackaged kits will make it easier for buyers to complete a full 6-ft. section of their deck railing.

The availability of a speed rail system in a composite line also gives deck builders design flexibility. All components in the line are available in three colors: Beach House Gray, Harvest Brown and Coastal Redwood. It addition, it does not require staining or painting, making its installation fast and easy.

ChoiceDek Foundations is manufactured to resist stains, mold and mildew. The products are composed of 95% total recycled content, keeping pre and post-consumer plastic materials such as packaging films and shopping bags from ending up in landfills.

Tax reform and e-fairness top RILA’s D.C. agenda

BY HBSDEALER Staff

The passage of comprehensive tax reform and a more level playing field between online retailers and Main Street retailers for sales tax collection top the Retail Industry Leaders Association’s public policy priorities for 2013.

According to RILA, the retail industry pays among the highest domestic effective tax rates at 36.4% more than 10 percentage points higher than the average for all other industries.

Further, the same compliance challenges that burden retailers burden their customers and small businesses. Tax reform that substantially reduces the corporate rate, treats all businesses the same and simplifies the system for all taxpayers, will put more money in consumers’ pockets and allow businesses to invest and grow.

The laws governing sales tax collection put Main Street retailers at a competitive disadvantage to their online-only competitors, RILA said. Specifically, online retailers are exempted in many states from collecting the sales tax owed on purchases made online, resulting in a perceived price advantage. Because of public pressure brought to bear by RILA and its partners, Amazon.com will be required to collect sales tax in over 50% of the U.S. consumer market by the end of this year.

Here is a complete list of RILA’s 2013 Public Policy priorities:

Tax Reform: Pass comprehensive tax reform that lowers rates and simplifies compliance for corporations, consumers and small businesses.

E-Fairness: Level the playing field for Main Street retailers and give states the right to enforce their sales tax laws online.

Health Care: Protect retailers’ ability to continue to offer employees quality health coverage.

Labor: Stop job-killing labor regulations that create micro-unions and ambush elections.

Privacy: Promote a self-regulatory model to consumer privacy that recognizes the needs and expectations of consumers.

Swipe Fee Reform: Extend debit swipe fee reforms to credit cards.

Trade: Pursue the adoption of simple, flexible rules of origin for apparel as part of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and the expansion of the Information Technology Agreement.
