Kelly-Moore Paints unveils new zero-VOC line
San Carlos, Calif.-based Kelly-Moore Paints has introduced its new zero-VOC colorants, which “will maintain excellent interior air quality during application without sacrificing performance,” according to the company.
Kelly-Moore is transitioning from conventional universal colorants to the new zero-VOC colorants; this has been completed in all of the company’s California and Nevada locations. The rest of its stores will be completed by this summer.
“Kelly-Moore is committed to meeting top health and environmental concerns and California’s stringent regulations,” said Steve DeVoe, Kelly-Moore’s president, CEO and chairman of the board. “Transitioning to zero-VOC colorants will keep the company at the forefront of environmental innovation and regulation in the paint industry.”
The new zero-VOC colorants have eliminated the common problems of poor drying and water sensitivity, which causes blushing and blistering. In addition, the colorants offer high strength, improved hiding, more fade resistance and expanded color options — all without the additional solvents.
“These next generation zero-VOC colorants are not only better for the environment, they have better touch up properties than conventional colorants for the professional contractor, and also deliver better UV fade resistance for better long-term performance," said Mark Zielinski, VP sales.
The Golden Hammer strikes again
The 28th Golden Hammer Awards saw Bob Taylor enter the Home Channel Hall of Fame and Westminster, Mass.-based Aubuchon Hardware take home the Retailer of the Year award.
Single-store operator McDaniel’s Do-It Center of Snohomish, Wash., was also recognized as the Golden Hammer “Tools of the Trade” honoree.
Do it Best Corp. CEO Bob Taylor said he was humbled by his induction. “When I look back at the list of past honorees, it’s a distinguished list, and it’s humbling to be recognized.”
Taylor, who was president of his family-owned hardware store chain in Virginia before joining Do it Best Corp., credited his father Dawson Taylor for being a great mentor and businessman. “My dad is always one who looks years out into the future and wonders what’s next,” Taylor said.
Taylor was introduced by John Shields, VP safety sales for Safety Works, the sponsor of the Home Channel Hall of Fame.
Aubuchon Hardware’s M. Marcus Moran Jr. accepted the Retailer of the Year award on behalf of 121-store Aubuchon Hardware. Moran, the grandson of company founder W.E. Aubuchon, credited the company’s 1,250 employees. “We’re very proud of all of them. Our store mangers have an average length of service today of 23 years. They are the backbone of the business. We will bring this Golden Hammer back home to them.”
The Golden Hammer ceremony also recognized Golden Hammer Award-winning vendors. Among them are these committee choice award winners in five categories:

Tools of the Trade award honoree McDaniel’s Do-It Center owner Brad McDaniel recognized the joy of retailing in his remarks. “Retail is fun,” McDaniel said. “When the sun comes out and merchandise is flying off the shelves, it’s a lot of fun.“
Whirlpool opens campus in Michigan
Whirlpool Corp. has announced the opening of its new, state-of-the-art Riverview Campus in Benton Harbor, Mich.
"With the opening of this beautiful and spacious campus, we are looking forward to a continued future with the city of Benton Harbor, which we have been proud to call home for over 100 years," said Jeff Fettig, chairman and CEO. "The Riverview Campus allows Whirlpool Corp. to deliver on improvements in productivity, operations, energy efficiency and overall employee experience."
An investment of $70 million, the Riverview Campus, which is located at 600 W. Main St. in Benton Harbor and covers 245,275 sq. ft., is registered with the U.S. Green Building Council and is seeking LEED Gold certification.
Construction began with a groundbreaking ceremony in November 2010, as part of the company’s plan to consolidate its 15 owned and leased facilities into three centralized office campuses. The three campuses now include the existing Administrative Center and Technology Center Campuses, as well as the multiple building Riverview Campus. The company also plans to retain its Hilltop South offices at 150 Hilltop Rd. in St. Joseph and the Harbor Town offices at 145 East Main St., Benton Harbor.
In addition to the Michigan campus, Whirlpool continues to invest in U.S. manufacturing jobs and $1 billion in its U.S. footprint from 2010 to 2014, including:
• A new $200 million production facility and distribution center recently opened in Cleveland, adding 130 new jobs to the work force there.
• Acquisition of the former WC Wood facility in Ottawa, Ohio, adding about 400 jobs and bringing total employment in the State of Ohio to approximately 10,000.
• A $175 million investment in the company’s Clyde, Ohio laundry facilities, which produce energy- and water-efficient laundry products.
• A $20 million investment in its Amana, Iowa, refrigeration plant to drive improved productivity and efficiency.
