Leviton’s new Smartlock Pro AFCI Receptacle aims to reduce electrical fires

BY HBSDealer Staff

Leviton has taken a step toward reducing the risk of electrical fires with the release of its new Smartlock Pro Outlet Branch Circuit (OBC) Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) Receptacle.

The receptacle helps prevent a range of dangerous arc faults by detecting them early on and de-energizing the circuit downstream of the device, which helps prevent resultant ignition.

According to the company, AFCI protection is required by the National Electric Code in certain locations throughout the home in new construction. Updated receptacles in older homes will require them as well by 2014.

Leviton’s OBC AFCI is compliant with new NEC regulations and aims to provide a convenient solution for older homes, which are prone to electrical fires. It also meets Underwriters Laboratories (UL) Standard 1699A (Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupters, Outlet Branch Circuit Type).

The receptacle is available in white, ivory, light almond, gray, black and brown, and it’s compatible with Leviton’s Decora collection of wiring devices and wallplates.
