Home Depot project hits roadblock in SoCal

BY HBSDEALER Staff

A proposal to build Home Depot store in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., has hit a setback after protracted negotiations over the price of the city-owned land, according to an article in Orange County Register

City Council members voted last October to enter exclusive talks with the Atlanta home improvement retailer for the 16.4-acre parcel. Home Depot wants to buy the land for $9 million, according to the news report. But the city, which has done wetlands restoration and made other improvements, has been unwilling to settle on a price.

Local retailers like DeNault’s True Value and Vista Paint are also opposed to Home Depot moving into the area with a 107,000 sq. ft. store and 34,000 sq. ft. garden center, saying it would draw customers away from local businesses.

On May 20, the city council, acting as the community redevelopment agency, voted unanimously to get the land appraised and explore other options, which include reviewing offers from other developers.

OSHA investigating worker’s death at Lowe’s

BY HBSDEALER Staff

Federal authorities are looking into a fatal accident that occurred at a Lowe’s store in Enterprise, Ala., the company has confirmed. The victim, who has not been identified, was pinned between a delivery truck and a trailer and was airlifted to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating the incident. Karen Cobb, a spokeswoman for Lowe’s, said the cause has not yet been determined.

“We are working with OSHA to investigate the accident,” she said. “We are saddened at the loss of a member of our Lowe’s family. Our thoughts are with the employee’s family and co-workers at the Lowe’s of Enterprise at this difficult time.”

A major retail artery of Joplin, Mo. — including a Home Depot and a Walmart — was hit hard by the deadly tornado Sunday, according to an article in the Joplin Globe.

According to a Home Depot spokesman, a store associate was killed in the storm. High winds ripped the roof of both stores located on busy Range Line Road.

In total, the death toll from the tornado is expected to rise to 100, according to the article.
